TERRE HAUTE —
Brother Scank and Ricky Brookins each ran for two touchdowns, Chris Barrett II passed for two more TDs and speedy Charles Dillahunt scored on a 40-yard aerial connection — the only time he touched the football all night — to lead host Terre Haute North over outmanned Northview 55-0 in high school action Friday.
The Patriots also had three interceptions — by Austin Lewis, Ryan Moshak and Vasco Billberry (returned 18 yards for a touchdown) — in posting their second victory of the season.
“It’s always a battle with Northview,” North coach Chris Barrett assessed afterward. “So we challenged our kids — coming off our big rivalry week with [Terre Haute] South — to come out and be focused, execute, no stupid penalties or mistakes.”
Penalties provided the only negative statistic for the Patriots, who were flagged eight times for 75 yards, but coach Barrett wasn’t particularly worried about that.
“We had some effort penalties, but we didn’t have any big mistakes or unforced turnovers,” he pointed out. “So we just came out and took care of business. It was good for us as a [coaching] staff to see them come out and just play and not have that post-South lull.”
The home team moved quickly on its first possession, capping a five-play, 59-yard drive with a 21-yard TD burst by Scank.
Midway through the first quarter, North rattled off nine plays to get another touchdown from Scank, who bulled across the goal line from 1 yard out.
Before the end of the period, the Patriots increased their margin to 21-0 when young Barrett fired a medium-range pass to Lewis, who broke a tackle at the Northview 20-yard line and sprinted the rest of the way to complete a 32-yard TD play.
North added 20 more points in the second quarter — thanks to the Billberry interception return, Dillahunt’s TD sprint down the right sideline and Brookins’ 56-yard TD dash — to take a 41-0 lead into the lockerroom at halftime.
“This year, we just had the bigger horses in the fight,” coach Barrett mentioned.
With 5:45 remaining in the third quarter, the strangest play of the night occurred.
Chris Barrett II tried to field a snap from the shotgun position. But it was high and he got a hand on it, knocking it straight down. It bounced straight back up — and into the hands of Brookins — then he scampered 37 yards for a touchdown to help pad the Patriots’ cushion to 47-0.
Reserve running back Austin Barron crashed in from the Northview 1 for the final touchdown midway through the fourth frame.
Senior running back Jesse Miller produced the only significant offense for the Knights, rushing 23 times for 71 yards.
For North, Brookins (133) and Scank (60) led a 256-yard ground attack and young Barrett contributed 137 yards through the air.
“We’ll be right back at it, studying this game film in the morning,” coach Barrett promised, realizing Center Grove will be the next opponent next Friday.
“Once we get that rapped up, we’ll start preparing for Center Grove. Our guys are building confidence each week and they continue to work each week, so I’m happy for our guys. They’re responding and the leadership is great. We just need to keep that going into the heart of our MIC [Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference] season.”

Kehrt Award goes to Emily Bell, Lee Davis
Emily Bell of Terre Haute South and Lee Davis of Terre Haute North are the 2013 recipients of the Willard M. Kehrt Mental Attitude Award.
Bell and Davis were nominated by their schools and chosen in a vote by the Kehrt Award panel. Both will be recognized at awards assemblies later in the month at the schools.
Bell played varsity basketball four years at South and is competing in track this season, running the 800 and two relays. “I wanted something to do my senior year,” Bell said.
She plans to attend DePauw University and play basketball. DePauw is the reigning NCAA Division III champ in women's basketball.
Bell tore an AÇL playing in a basketball tournament the summer after her sophomore season. She missed most of her junior season but came back to play her senior year and was second leading scorer and leading rebounder her final season.
Bell also was leading rebounder her sophomore year. -
South softball's power display earns Braves share of MIC
The fun that the Terre Haute South high school softball team had Saturday — including those five home runs — was all the result of the hard work the Braves had put in before the game, coach Dwayne Stout said after the game.

Freshman group adds to Big Four teams' baseball tradition
The Terre Haute North-Terre Haute South high school baseball series wasn’t an inning old last week before T.J. Collett of the Patriots lashed a run-scoring single.
That hit helped the Patriots take a 2-0 lead, but in the top of the second inning a three-run double by Justin Jenkins sparked the visiting Braves to a four-run inning.
North tied the score in the bottom of the second inning, Collett driving in another run. And just before rain caused the game to be suspended, South called Logan Ames in from its bullpen for some solid pitching.
Not bad for a trio of freshmen. And the weekend hadn’t even started yet. -
