BRAZIL —
Northview tried traps and zones and some man-to-man, but nothing stopped Terre Haute South’s Jeffrey Turner in boys high school basketball late Friday night.
Turner scored 37 points on 11-of-23 shooting from the floor and 13-of-14 accuracy from the free throw line while leading South to a 68-60 win over host Northview. The 6-foot-2 Turner also pulled down six rebounds, stole the ball twice and passed out several assists in the Braves’ eighth win of the season.
Timmy Herrin, with 10 points, was the only other South player to score in double figures.
It was South’s fifth win in the last six games and the fourth straight loss for Northview.
Ethan Whitson led Northview with 25 points on 10-for-13 shooting from the floor. Christian Ellis added 11 points.
South’s trapping defense, led by Logan Steward with six steals, forced Northview into 22 turnovers.
“I felt like we beat ourselves. We turned the ball over and we didn’t do a very good job on [rebounding],” Northview coach Clint Weddle said.
South jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the opening minutes of the contest with Conner Shipley hitting two free throws, Kevaris Gregory scoring a rebound, Logan Steward dropping in a three and Turner netting the first of his 13-first half points.
Northview’s Ellis scored the last three points of the first period, but South took a 15-9 lead into the second quarter.
Northview’s defense and Whitson’s 13 points in the second stanza kept the Knights close. South’s trapping defense forced Northview in eight turnovers in the second quarter and the Braves took a 29-24 halftime lead.
Northview stayed within four points of South most of the third quarter, but over the final 3:15 the Braves’ Turner took over the game. Turner found Steward for an open layup, then scored back-to-back buckets of his won to put the Braves up 40-32.
But Northview’s Craig Peters and Joe Ball hit back-to-back threes to close the third quarter, cutting South’s lead to 43-38. Peters and Ball hit consecutive threes again to open the fourth quarter and bring the Knights within one, 45-44, with seven minutes to play.
Then Turner took over again. First he found Steward for a basket, then Turner netted three points on his own. With the Braves clinging to a two-point cushion, Turner passed to an open Kevaris Gregory for a three then Steward stole ball and pass to Turner for an open three. And with 4:45 to play Turner added another three that put the Braves up 57-46.
Turner was called for his fourth foul and went to the bench with 4:20 left in the contest. He was back on the court in time to hit eight straight free throws over the final 1:01 despite Northview’s efforts to keep the ball away from him.
