TERRE HAUTE —
Terre Haute North got and played just the kind of game it needed Thursday afternoon in the game four of the Pizza Hut Wabash Valley Classic at Terre Haute South High School.
The Patriots last played on Dec. 15, so after 12 days off, North needed to break off the rust, stretch the muscles and get back into the flow of competition. Everything fell into place for in the 89-30 win over Turkey Run.
North (5-3) now plays Robinson at 2:30 p.m. Friday at South High School.
North jumped out to a 16-3 lead in the first quarter and cruised to its fifth win in eight starts.
“It was good for us to get back out on the court in game action. We really needed that because we were chomping at the bite to get back on the court and play. I thought our guys came out and executed, they were unselfish,” North coach Todd Woelfle sai d.
Austin Lewis led North with 14 points, followed by Calvin Blank with 13 and Patrick Hart with 11.
Riley Sunderman led Turkey Run with 13 points.
North led 16-3 after one quarter and 44-13 at halftime. The Patriots shot 71 percent [17-24] from the floor in the first half. The Patriots’ largest lead of the game was the final score.
North, a heavy favorite going into the game, played with a relaxed intensity. The Patriots moved the basketball on the offensive end and showed a steady intensity on defense while holding the Warriors to just 30 points.
The Patriots shot 65 percent — going 34-of-52 from the floor — and dominated the boards 30-6.
“The reason we shot the ball well is because we took good shots. We got shots, we crashed the boards and I thought we were able to control the game because of that,” Woelfle said.
Playing with a big lead took a lot of the pressure off North’s shooting.
“I think [relaxed intensity] comes from taking good shots. You’re not forcing things, therefore you’re not pressing and when they do that we have a lot of options. When they do that they’re fun to watch, I think we have a chance to be pretty good,” Woelfle said.
North played everyone in uniform, but made sure not to run up the score. The Patriots didn’t back off on either end of the court.
“I thought [Turkey Run] played extremely hard. They were just a little outmanned today. But their kids played hard. They hit some tough shots,” Woelfle said.
