BRAZIL —
Host Northview defeated Terre Haute South 6-4 late Saturday night to win the Big Four Tournament in high school baseball.
Northview still has a Big 4 game to play against West Vigo on Monday — the two Western Indiana Conference teams were rained out earlier in the week — but even a loss would give the Knights the same Big Four record as South, and head-to-head competition is the first tiebreaker.
Brock Wheeler tied a Northview school record — one held by his coach, Scott McDonald — with his fifth save of the season in the championship game.
He was the third pitcher Northview used in the bottom of the fifth as the Braves rallied from a 6-4 deficit, then held South scoreless the rest of the way.
Craig Peters had two hits and an RBI and Zach Hull had a double to lead Northview. Pete Lannoo had two hits and two RBIs for South.
Teams from Terre Haute North and West Vigo — the defending Big 4 champion — eliminated themselves with giveaway games earlier in the day Saturday.
South got its first Big Four win on Friday night, a come-from-behind decision at Terre Haute North.
The Patriots looked to be ready to bounce back in Saturday’s first game at Northview, leading the Knights 4-1 going into the bottom of the fifth inning, but for a second straight game were unable to close the deal.
A run-scoring double by Connor Pierce in the bottom of the fifth capped a four-run Northview rally and enabled the Knights to take a 5-4 lead, and when the Patriots gave up four unearned runs after two out in the bottom of the sixth, that pretty much sealed Northview’s 9-4 win.
Kodie Girton and Craig Peters each had two hits and two runs to lead Northview’s 10-hit attack. Devin Clark also had two hits and Tyler Wilson and winning pitcher T.J. Decker also had doubles.
Although North entered its second game Saturday afternoon in a four-game losing streak, it was time for the Patriots to receive some generosity.
With the game scoreless going into the bottom of the second inning — West Vigo stranding a pair of runners in each of its first two at-bats — the Patriots mounted a big rally thanks to a walk to Scottie Finzel, a single by Nick Long, two botched rundowns by the Vikings and a West Vigo throwing error.
The Patriots went on to score eight unearned runs in the inning, the big blows for North a two-out, three-run double by Colton Pittman and a two-out, two-run triple by Long.
“It looks like there’s a lot of stuff I’ve got to get taught,” coach Steve DeGroote of West Vigo said after the Vikings’ day was over.
A homer by Tony Rosselli started a three-run fourth inning for the Patriots that gave them an 11-1 lead. West Vigo fought off the 10-run rule temporarily with a two-run rally that included a run-scoring single by Lucas Fagg, but a triple by Rosselli and a double by Nick Norton enabled North to pull back ahead for a 13-3 win in the bottom of the fifth.
“We seemed to have the baseball bounce the right direction for us for the first time in a couple of weeks,” coach Shawn Turner of the Patriots said after the game. “I’m thankful we didn’t just go out and give up.
“We played a lot of guys [during four games in three days] and they all gave an effort,” Turner continued. “[In this game] we created some opportunities for ourselves.”
West Vigo then played South, and despite an error on the second batter of the game it was a much cleaner showing for the Vikings. Unfortunately for them, however, the Braves scored at least one run in each of the first five innings of an eventual 7-4 win.
The early error and a run-scoring single by Preston Tofaute made it 2-0 in the top of the first, but the Vikings tied the score in the bottom of the inning on two-out RBI singles by Cogan Stewart and Davie Inman.
Jacob Johnson had a run-scoring single and Spencer Whitlock an RBI double in South’s second, and it was 5-2 in the third inning when winning pitcher Cody Brock hit a sacrifice fly.
Another pair of back-to-back hits by Cogan Stewart and Inman enabled West Vigo to get within 5-3, but South got an RBI double by Pete Lannoo in the fourth and Daniel Marlow’s double blossomed into another run in the fifth.
Kevin Stewart gave West Vigo a good four-inning relief performance and Cody Thornton drove in a run with a fifth-inning single. But Matt Townsend earned a save by getting out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth during his three-inning stint.
“[Kevin Stewart] has really pitched well of late,” DeGroote said, “and we had some chances … we had some kids have some good ballgames, and [North and South] have got good ballclubs … but it was a long day.”

Goatee, Bertoli ran away with Spring Athlete of the Year
When honoring athletes after a season of excellence, the phrase “what might have been” doesn’t usually come up.

South runs into ‘buzzsaw’ at girls tennis semistate
Postmatch interviews don’t often begin with a coach and a reporter ready to blurt out the same word, but that was the case for Bill Blankenbaker and his interviewer Saturday morning after the Center Grove Semistate for girls high school tennis.
Unfortunately for Blankenbaker’s Terre Haute South team, that word was “buzzsaw.”
Greenwood’s Kawamoto twins made quick work of the top of the Braves’ singles lineup, so despite stellar efforts by both South doubles teams the Woodmen’s 3-2 victory didn’t seem all that close.
Greenwood moves on to Fishers, where it plays Floyd Central or Jasper on Friday in the state quarterfinals.
Also playing Friday, but at Park Tudor, will be South’s Miranda Camp and Nicole Howe, who reached the individual doubles finals for the second straight season by virtue of their 6-4, 6-2 win over the Greenwood team of Taylor Hudnall and Brittany Toney.
“It’s really exciting,” said Howe of the prospect of a second straight finals trip, “but I wish our team could’ve gone with us.”
