TERRE HAUTE —
Terre Haute North propelled itself into first place in the Metropolitan Intersholastic Conference high school softball standings with two home victories after the rain stopped Saturday morning.
Meanwhile, Terre Haute South — playing the same two opponents in reverse order on North’s other softball diamond — barely missed a chance to remain tied with the Patriots in the MIC.
North got a two-out bloop single from Paige Collins to plate Allie McKinney from second base in the bottom of the ninth inning to edge Ben Davis 3-2, despite striking out 14 times against pitcher Kaisey Carson.
Then the Patriots exploded for six runs in the second inning against Indianapolis North Central on their way to posting a 10-0 five-inning victory.
South also needed extra innings — a total of eight to be exact — before it could slip past Indy North Central 4-3. The Braves’ heroics came from Lexi Higgins, who singled in Rebecca Latta from third with two outs in the bottom of the eighth.
But the Braves battled Ben Davis to a 2-2 tie through six innings before Jesse Britt socked a solo home run to center field with two outs in the top of the seventh. The Giants summoned the hard-throwing Carson to relieve starting pitcher Bridget Poteet in the bottom of the frame and she preserved the 3-2 triumph.
North is now 4-0 in MIC action, leading Class 4A No. 2-ranked Carmel (3-0) and Class 4A No. 3-ranked Center Grove (3-0) by one-half game. South fell to 3-1 and Ben Davis is 3-2.
North and South will face each other at 7 p.m. Tuesday on the Braves’ field.
In the Patriots’ first game Saturday, Ben Davis tallied once in the top of the second inning. But North answered with a pair in the bottom of the frame when Hailee Travioli led off with a solo homer to left-center and Kaci McBride later walked and scored on a throwing error.
Britt, the same batter who would beat South later in the day, belted a solo homer off North pitcher Hillary Rittenberg in the sixth to knot the score at 2-2.
North had a chance to win in the bottom of the seventh after Jazmine Allen led off with a double down the left-field line and moved to third base on a groundout. With two outs, Carson walked Travioli to bring up Collins, who struck out swinging on a 3-2 count.
Ben Davis threatened to score in the top of the ninth.
With one out, Sabrina Scalf singled and stole second base. Later, a long flyball to left was dropped, but shortstop Marlee Yeager took the cut-off throw and fired home in time to prevent Scalf, who was tagged out by plate-blocking catcher McBride, from scoring the go-ahead run.
With one out in the bottom of the ninth, McKinney doubled over the center fielder’s head. One out later, Carson intentionally walked to Travioli to bring up Collins again.
This time, she delivered.
Collins’ bloop single to shallow center gave McKinney enough to race home from second with the winning run.
“After striking out [in the seventh], it gave me a boost to get a hit the next time,” Collins told the Tribune-Star. “It was an inside fastball on my hands and I just tried to hit the ball and put it in play. It wasn’t my hardest hit ever, but it did the job and we ended up winning.”
“Paige told me before she went up to the plate [in the ninth] that she was going to hit the ball this time and we were going to win,” North coach Jack Kirchner said. “By golly, she kept her promise. That’s our team in a nutshell: We don’t quit. We always think we can win.”
The Patriots’ second game went much easier.
Yeager tripled in three runs and Allen tripled in one run as part of that six-run second inning.
With the 10-run rule looming in the bottom of the fifth, Sierra Sykes singled home two runners and Jessica Will singled home Sykes to end the game.
Left-hander Alisha Ludwig pitched a four-hit shutout.
“We played good defense and Alisha pitched a good ballgame,” Kirchner assessed. “And we hit the ball. When we hit the ball, we’re going to win.”
From the South perspective, Shelbie Scamihorn singled in Kelsey Marlow and Cheyenne Reinig singled in courtesy-runner Hollie Jones in the first inning against North Central.
After North Central moved ahead 3-2, the Braves tied the score in the sixth when Latta doubled in Jones with one out.
Latta walked in the bottom of the eighth and advanced to third on a double by Marlow, setting the stage for Higgins’ clutch single.
“Higgins has really stepped up and started hitting the ball with some authority,” South coach Steve Woerner noted.
In their second game, Mackenzie McGregor doubled down the left-field line to send home Marlow and Higgins in the third inning to tie Ben Davis at 2-2.
But Britt’s homer off freshman pitcher Hannah Gossman and Carson’s relief stint kept South from moving into a first-place MIC tie with its cross-county rivals.
“We left eight runners on [base],” Woerner mentioned. “Hannah Gossman did a tremendous job of keeping us in the ballgame. We just couldn’t get the big hit when we needed it.”
