West Terre Haute — Terre Haute South wound up regular-season play in girls basketball Tuesday night defeating West Vigo 59-39 at West Vigo.
The Braves won another Vigo County championship, finishing 2-0, and concluded the season with a 12-9 record. They’ll now get ready for their third game with Terre Haute North on Tuesday in the 4A Terre Haute South sectional.
“We attained a winning record. That was one of our goals. We’ll get ready for our next game now and focus on that one,” South coach Dave Cassell said.
Liz Vollrath is the only senior on the South roster.
The Vikings are 3-16 and will face Covington in their final game of the season. They will commence 3A sectional play on Tuesday at Sullivan against Owen Valley.
“That’s the fourth time in my six years we have drawn Owen Valley,” said West Vigo coach Ryan Easton.
West Vigo’s two seniors — Marianne Umphries and Karen Beal — were recognized prior to the contest on Senior Night.
South led at all the quarter stops in the county clash and outscored the Vikings 17-11 in the final period as they hiked their margin from 14 points to the final 20.
The Braves had a 17-11 lead after one period with Vollrath and Haley Seibert combining for 11 of the points. South fronted 30-16 at halftme and had a 42-28 lead after three quarters.
West Vigo made 7 of 11 free throws in the third period and cut the lead to 37-28 before the Braves closed the quarter with a 5-0 run.
“I was proud of the effort … we played well. We had one stretch on defense and, if we would have gotten to the shooters early, the score might have been different. In spite of the score, we proved we can compete. It got us prepared for the sectional,” Easton said.
Seibert led all scorers with 17 points while Hannah Lee had 11 and Vollrath 10 for the winners and each had five rebounds. Mikayla Metheny had a team-high seven boards for South.
Erin Barton tallied 10 points and Brooklyn Waters had nine along with four rebounds and five steals for West Vigo. Beal had a game-high 13 rebounds and Umphries pulled down eight.
