CLAY CITY —
The Clay City Eels aren’t ranked in the Class A high school boys basketball polls but played like they should be Friday night against the Class A No. 8-ranked North Daviess Cougars.
Clay City rallied from an early nine-point deficit, built a seven-point lead, but lost to the Cougars 38-37 at the Clay City Eel Dome.
North Daviess’ Conner Wikle hit the first of two free throws with 2.6 seconds left in the game to raise the Cougars’ record to 12-4.
“We definitely played better tonight, but I felt like we let it give away. Maybe we can take something out of this and get better,” Clay City coach Vance Edmondson said.
Clay City (9-6) was led by Ben Denker and Brylan Jones with 11 points each.
North Daviess was led by Lewis Nugent with 13 points.
Prior to the game, IHSAA Commmissioner Bobby Cox presented Clay City with the Good Sportsmanship Award.
Denker hit three 3-point shots and two free throws in the third quarter to give Clay City a 33-28 lead going into the fourth quarter.
But the Eels, who shot 56 percent (13-23) for the game, were 0-4 shooting from the in the fourth quarter. Clay City hit 4-6 free throws for its only points in the final period.
“We can’t have fourth quarters were we score four points,” Edmondson said.
North Daviess’ Alex Wittmer tied the game 36-36 with five minutes to play and it remained a one-point game to the final buzzer.
“We let it game away. We’ve just got to be mentally tougher,” Edmondson said.
