Lough seventh, See fourth at State Wrestling Finals

INDIANAPOLIS — Aaron See and Tsali Lough learned the hard way Saturday at Bankers Life Fieldhouse just how thin the line between victory and defeat can be in high school wrestling.

See of Northview, who finished fourth at 220 pounds, lost his chance for a spot in the championship match on a takedown with less than two seconds remaining that cost him a 4-2 decision against Joe Gallegos of South Bend Clay.

Lough of Terre Haute South, seventh at 160, led his quarterfinal match against Connor Robinson of New Palestine until the final seconds, then fell victim to a five-point move — takedown and near fall — that cost him an 8-5 loss. Robinson went on to upset second-ranked Kirk Johnson of Perry Meridian and reached the championship match himself.

Lough rescued his day with a pin of Hobart’s Scottie Sopko in the seventh-place match, while See’s highlight was a come-from-behind win over previously unbeaten Seth Biberstine of Southern Wells in Saturday morning’s quarterfinals.

“That match was amazing,” coach Dan Mikesell of the Knights said later in the evening. “I talked to a couple of [referees] who thought [Biberstine] was going to walk right through the state finals.

“It was probably the best match of Aaron’s career. Total guts, total effort.”

See had fallen behind Biberstine 4-2 on a takedown with a second left in the first period, and trailed 8-3 midway through the second. But before that period was over, he’d gotten an escape, a takedown and a three-point near-fall in the waning seconds that put him ahead 9-8, and closed out the match with an escape, another takedown and a late near-fall.

“He was a lot stronger and faster than me,” See said of Biberstine, “and I had to beat him with my phsycial conditioning ... beating an undefeated kid was a pretty good feeling.”

Neither See nor Gallegos had been able to get a takedown in the semifinal match — Gallegos had a reversal, See two escapes — until the very end of the match.

“We had to go from one thorn [Biberstine] to another,” Mikesell said. [See] didn’t win the match, but he had a very good match there as well. [Gallegos] just spun behind us as time was running out. I questioned both officials [about whether or not the wrestlers had been out of bounds], but they both said he was in.”

“I think I might have been out of bounds [on that takedown], but it happens,” See noted.

See’s third-place match was against Gelen Robinson of Lake Central, who might still have been incensed after an emotional and controversial loss in his own semifinal match. The quick, long-armed sophomore got two early takedowns, and See’s two escapes only got the Northview senior within 5-2.

“I’m pretty happy with a fourth-place finish,” See said shortly after that. “I had my big upset in the second round, it was close in the third round ... being a nobody coming in here, getting fourth is pretty exciting. I think I’m the first [wrestler] from Northview to get fourth.”

As far as Gelen Robinson was concerned?

“He’s a monster,” See said. “No doubt in my mind he’ll win the state next year.”

“I was really impressed the way Aaron handled his losses; he really showed his maturity,” Mikesell noted. “I’m fairly certain he got his 100th career win against Biberstine, he’s got the records for pins ... he’s come a long way from a chubby little sixth-grader. He never won a match in sixth grade. We’re going to miss his leadership and his personality in the weight room.”

Lough wasn’t as happy with his placing, and particularly unhappy with his part in getting it.

“Honestly, getting seventh sucks,” he said. “That was not what I came here to do, and I’m a little upset about that.

“I’m glad God’s blessed me with everything he’s given me,” the South senior quickly added, “so if seventh is what I was supposed to get, I’ll take it. He’s given me a lot of good people [met throughout my wrestling career].”

“He wrestled as hard as he could, all day long,” coach Gabe Cook said of Lough, “but it hurts to lose [the way he did against Connor Robinson]. It hurts a lot. And the reason it hurts so much is why he’s so successful — the time he puts in and the effort he puts forth. He’s a very passionate young man.”

Lough had gotten two quick takedowns in his quarterfinal match, and although he couldn’t get a third after allowed Robinson to escape to start the second period, the score was still 5-3 in Lough’s favor as the clock wound down. A last-ditch move by the New Palestine wrestler not only got a takedown but also put Lough on his back, however, and there was no time to recover.

“I was controlling the whole match. I was the only one scoring until the last 20 seconds,” said Lough, who allowed Connor Robinson all three points on conceded escapes. “But I let my guard down for about five seconds, and that’s what happens when you let your guard down: you get caught and you lose. I’ve just got to do my job and finish the match out.”

Lough fell victim to a five-point move again in his second match of the day against Merrillville’s Bobby Steveson, costing him a 7-2 loss after he’d recorded a quick takedown in that match too. In the seventh-place match, however, it was Lough’s turn to hit a move, and he ended his South career with a pin.

“It’s just so close up here [at the finals], everybody’s so close,” Cook pointed out. “[Lough] was about eight seconds away [from possibly wrestling for the championship.”
