TERRE HAUTE —
Jasper High School’s girls golf team won its fourth tournament of the young season Tuesday, taking first place in the Terre Haute South Braves Invitational played at Rea Park.
The Wildcats posted 317 to win — their third-best score of the year. Vincennes Rivet took second with 340 and Terre Haute South was third with 363.
They were followed by Northview 369, Terre Haute North 380, Washington 390, South Putnam 414, Cloverdale 424, Greencastle 436 and Linton 437. South Knox competed with three players.
Jasper junior Annie Getzin was medalist with 73 — her second-best score of the season — with teammate McKenzie Hilsmeyer second with 75, Sydney Shrum of Cloverdale third with 77, Alexandria Pickens of the host Braves fourth with 79 and Carly Waggoner and Payton Meeks of Rivet tied for fifth with 80s.
Jasper was playing its sixth match of the season. The Wildcats shot a season-best 298 last week at Eagle Valley in the Evansville area.
“It was a team effort and has been all year. And we have three girls waiting in the wings,” said Jasper coach Steve Milligan.
Jasper had three seniors, one junior and one sophomore in the lineup. “We have three players back from last year,” Milligan noted.
Getzin went 39-34 in taking medalist honors. “I had three birdies,” she mentioned.
Hilsmeyer said she had three birdies in her round — her third-best score — and was 37-38.
Shrum, a senior at Cloverdale, was 39-38 and had three birdies. “I hit four greens in regulation,” she said.
Pickens’ 79 was her best 18-hole score; she had two birdies in the round.
Two Wabash Valley players participated in their first matches of the season: Anna Potter of North and Megan Heaton of Northview.
Potter had been sidelined with a back injury and Heaton had been with a dance team in London for the 2012 Summer Olympics.
South competed in its third match and had a season-best score. Pickens with her 79 and Katelynn Gordon with an 87 led the host team.
“Our seniors stepped up today and had career-best low rounds,” said South coach Cara Stuckey.
South will be on the course again Thursday, meeting North Central at Sullivan Elks.
North competed in its fifth match in eight days and will not have another match until Aug. 16 when the Patriots face Northview at Forest Park.
Potter led the Patriots with 88 and Nicole Anderson was right behind with 89 as North posted its best score of the season.
“We can use the practice time. It’s good to watch the girls improve. Hopefully, Anna can continue to play,” said North coach Abe Nasser Jr.
