Sullivan's Pirtle, Linton's French reach golf state finals

Three Valley teams' seasons end in regional

WASHINGTON — The high school boys golf season has ended for three teams from the area but will continue for at least 18 more holes for two players.

Linton junior Clayton French and Sullivan freshman Nathan Pirtle both qualified as individuals for the state finals in the Washington Regional played Thursday at Country Oaks Golf Club.

French shot par-72 to tie for second medalist and Pirtle carded 74 to tie for sixth in the tournament.

Jasper had 296 to win the championship. Evansville Harrison took second with 303 and Heritage Hills shot 306 to qualify for the the finals.

Linton shot 319 to place sixth and Terre Haute North had 327 to tie for seventh.

The finals will begin Tuesday at The Legends of Indiana Course with the top nine teams and top nine individuals advancing to the final round on Wednesday.

Jasper’s Will Seger was medalist with 4-under-par 68. He went 34-34 with five birdies in his round which he said was his best of the season.

“I shot 65 here before,” said the player who intends to play college golf at Indiana University.

French tied Alex Turner of Harrison for second medalist. French was 37-35 with four birdies. “I chipped in for a birdie on 16. I’m ecstatic with this round,” he said.

He said the course played long and adapting to the wind was a factor. He had his best round of the season in Monday’s sectional when he shot 70.

French was in the last group — with Turner and Seger — to finish, while Pirtle was an individual qualifier for the regional and had to wait for about three hours to see if his score would be good to advance. He was 38-36 for the day with two birdies.

“The wind was not too bad. The greens were firm and fast, making putting difficult. I was able to hit some good shots,” Pirtle said.

Pirtle’s best round of the season also came in the sectional, when he shot 70 to be low individual qualifier.

Junior Sam Pollock led the North Patriots with 77 with Adam LaGrange next at 78 followed by Evan Perdiew at 81 and Ryan Baker with 91 for the team scoring.

Grant Lewellyn was the only senior in the lineup for the team coached this year for the first time by Abe Nasser Jr.

“It was a good season, getting to know the players and their game. We have a  lot of talent and potential. I am looking forward to working with them when I can so that we can get better … and more consistent,” said the coach, who also coaches the North girls team.

French paced the Miners with his 72 while Cole Bradbury had 79, Ben Boyd 83 and Luke Jerrells 85.

“It’s been a good year. We won our conference and sectional and our final record was 80-something and seven losses. I am proud of them,” said coach Derek Bradbury. “Boyd and Jerrells are our seniors. We’ll miss them.”

Owen Valley was the other team to qualify from the Linton Sectional for the regional. The Patriots shot 366.

Ryan Cahill of Terre Haute South and Dylan Nesty of Northview were other individual qualifiers. Cahill got off to a good start with 38 on his first nine but had problems on the second.

“I worried too much about my score and made some mistakes,” said the sophomore.
