Terre Haute South to take on North Central

MARSHALL, ILL. — North Central at Terre Haute South

The action — North Central’s Thunderbirds (1-4) make the short drive up U.S. 41 to play Terre Haute South’s Braves (1-3) in a nonconference game today.

The time — Varsity tipoff is approximately 7:30 p.m.

The airwaves — No broadcasts are scheduled.

The coaches — Ryan Kamman is 80-87 in his eighth season at North Central. Scott Ridge is 9-18 in his second year at South.

Probable starting lineups — For North Central: 5-8 freshman Gavin Stanifer and 5-7 sophomore Austin Jewell will be at guards, with 5-10 senior Tod Lebeda, 6-3 sophomore Loren Drake and 6-2 sophomore Mitchell Peterson up front.

For Terre Haute South: 6-2 senior Jeffrey Turner and 5-10 senior Kevaris Gregory are certain starters, with the other three spots up for grabs among 6-4 sophomore Timmy Herrin, 5-11 sophomore Conner Shipley, 5-11 senior Shane Stanley, 6-2 senior Preston Tofaute and 5-11 sophomore Spence Tofaute.

Key reserves — For North Central: 6-3 freshman Neal Greene, 5-9 junior Nick Stucker, 5-10 sophomore Andrew Nikirk. For South: 6-4 sophomore Greg Newton and 5-10 sophomore Jared Wolfe.

Team leaders — Stanifer is North Central’s leading scorer at approximately 12 points per game. Turner is averaging 29.5 points per game for South, with Gregory at about 12 points per game. Herrin is coming off a 23-point game for the Braves.

Recent games — North Central has lost four in a row, most recently a 63-48 decision against Class A power North Daviess on Friday. South got its first win on Friday, coming from 12 points down in the fourth quarter to overtake Center Grove 85-79.

Last meeting — If the two teams have played each other, it was prior to the 1993-94 season.

Coaches’ quotes — Kamman on the Thunderbirds: “We’re young and inexperienced. Tod [Lebeda] is the only one with any varsity experience, so it’s a big learning curve … but we’re playing hard. The younger kids need to learn how to be physical and play at the varsity level.”

Ridge on the Braves: “It was a great fourth quarter [against Center Grove]. There are not many games when you’re down 12 in the fourth quarter and pull out a win. The kids really turned it on, and we’ve got to keep that going.”

Kamman on playing the Braves: “They’re not really on our radar most years, but they are a [Class] 4A school with a great tradition; we know they’ll be a huge test for us.”

Ridge on playing the Thunderbirds: “We’re a small team too. Ryan [Kamman] is a really good coach, and I know they’ll play hard.”
