Defense, foul trouble cost North boys at Fishers

FISHERS — Calvin Blank was Terre Haute North’s leading scorer by a wide margin in Terre Haute North’s first high school basketball game this season.

On Saturday, he had to settle for being the leading scorer per minute.

Blank’s 17 points Saturday night at Fishers matched Austin Lewis for team leadership for the visiting Patriots, but Blank was limited by foul trouble in every quarter and the visitors lost 72-63 in a nonconference game.

Having their leading scorer often unavailable was hardly the Patriots’ only problem, however.

“We gave up entirely too many easy baskets,” coach Todd Woelfle said after the game. “We’re not a very good defensive team right now, and that’s the most disappointing part.”

North had needed a monumental comeback and four overtime periods to win its opener, and a comeback was in order again Saturday after the host Tigers scored the last 14 points of the first quarter to take a 19-8 lead.

The rest of the game was a series of uphill battles for the Patriots, exacerbated by — as Woelfle noted — their inability to stop the Tigers and their fast-paced attack.

In the second quarter, North was within 21-15, 30-26 and 32-28, but gave up a 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer.

In the third period, the visitors chopped the lead to 40-37 but Blank picked up his fourth foul in the midst of a 6-0 Fishers run.

Early in the fourth quarter the home team had a 57-43 lead, but then North looked like the fourth-quarter team that had overtaken Evansville Central three nights earlier. Even though Fishers missed just one field goal attempt in the last eight minutes, North was within 59-53 — after back-to-back 3-pointers by Casey Vickers — and twice cut the lead to five points before the Tigers got seven straight points to put the game away.

“The kids battled all night. Our problems are not a matter of effort,” Woelfle said, “but of execution and focus on every single possession.”

In addition to the double-figure efforts by Blank and Lewis, North got nine points from Vickers and eight each from Nate Jahn and Steven Davis. Jahn had seven assists and Vickers five.

Blank, who got 36 in the North opener, didn’t play over half the game Saturday, if that, and his four fouls — which were fouls — were all unlucky ones.

“There were some unfortunate calls,” Woelfle agreed, “and he’s got to learn to be smart, how to play with foul trouble ... because we need him out there.”

The explosive Tigers got 22 points from C.J. Johnson — 13 of those in the third quarter — plus 17 from Jaylon Brown, 14 from Sean Lonergan and 10 plus six assists from Devin Chaudion. Point guard Jon Fleming had nine assists.

The 6-foot Brown was the game’s leading rebounder from the backcourt, and got his points despite missing two dunks. North had no one with more than three rebounds — although, with the home team shooting 63 percent from the field, there weren’t all that many missed shots.

“Fishers is a nice team, and they shot the ball very well,” Woelfle noted. “Our mistakes are correctable ... we’ll get it figured out.”
