JASONVILLE —
West Vigo’s Andrew Kump, Kaleb Blair and Nathan Kump were the three best runners on Saturday in the Shakamak Invitational high school cross country meet. But the Vikings needed more and didn’t have it.
For the second meet in a row, West Vigo lost by one point on the tie-breaker — the sixth runner. West Vigo and Eastern Greene were tied 55-55 with their first five runners scored. The sixth runners broke the tie: Eastern Greene’s Tyler Brugh finished 22nd and West Vigo’s Landon Ellis 28th.
West Vigo, Eastern Greene and Clay City were obvious favorites at finish. Eastern Greene and Clay City each had six runners among the top 25 and West Vigo three, the big three.
“Everybody got out very well. The top three really stuck with it. Andrew [Kump] was awesome. He’s really doing well right now,” West Vigo coach Bill Petscher said.
With former Shakamak all-state runner Drew Gambill now running for Indiana State, West Vigo’s Andrew Kump set his own pace and dominated the race in 16 minutes and 21 seconds. Teammates Blair and Nathan Kump were his closest competition at 17:11 and 17:12, respectively.
“The last two years before this I was always trying to pace off [Gambill]. I never could. I finally had a good race here. My time was good. My goal was a little lower [time], but setting your own pace it’s kind of hard to do that,” Kump said.
“[Kump’s] sights are set very high. He’s not only looking at this, he’s not only looking at [the conference meet]. He’s looking at sectional, regional and semistate. That’s really important. If you don’t have somebody behind you [pushing] you got to look ahead,” Petscher said.
West Vigo’s sights are set high too.
“What I am really looking at is next Saturday with the WIC Meet at West Vigo. I hope to do a repeat there,” Petscher said.
Dylan Graves was West Vigo’s fourth runner in 25th place at 19:10, Derek Braun ran fifth in 19:22 for 27th and Ellis was 28th in 19:27.
“They are working hard. They are improving every meet. I’m confident they’ll do what they need to do,” Petscher said.
Clay City was led by Ben Denker in eighth, Jake Tiefel in 11tgh and Jesse Vansickle in 14th.
Eastern Greene also won the girls varsity race, 35-56 over Shakamak.
Cloverdale’s Claudia Monnett worked her way through the pack to win the 5K race in 21:07, her best time of the season.
“I like to start off slow, then catch people. It’s so much easier for to pass one person at a time than stay in front. I was probably in 15th to begin with,” Monnett said.
Shakamak was led by Savannah Turner in eight place in 22:36 and Brooklyn Samm in 10th at 22:47.
West Vigo coach Steve DeGroote was pleased with the Vikings’ improvement in taking third with 75 points. Sarah Hudson paced the Vikings at 22:41 for ninth.
“We’re shooting for that end of the year sectional and we want to be the best we possibly can by then. We would love to have a shot at going to the regional. We just got to get better and better and we’re getting better and better. I think we ran well today,” DeGroote said.
