NOBLESVILLE —
Guerin Catholic was as good as advertised as the defending Class 3A state champion rolled to a 59-45 win over Terre Haute South in boys high school basketball Saturday night.
The Golden Eagles came into their nonconference matchup with Scott Ridge’s Braves with a 10-3 record and showed that it was anything but a fluke.
Led by junior forward Aaron Brennan’s 17 points and 10 rebounds, both team highs, Guerin Catholic was able to keep South at bay for most of the evening.
Guard Matt Mabus added 11 points and guard Whitt Rapp chipped in with 10 points and nine rebounds for the Golden Eagles, who outshot South 44 percent (21 of 48) to 30 percent (16 of 54).
Senior forward Jeffrey Turner, though, was a one-man wrecking crew for the Braves. Turner fired in a game-high 32 points, knocking down five 3-point shots, and grabbed 10 rebounds. He was the lone South player to score in double figures.
Guard Logan Steward chipped in with five points. Sophomore forward Timmy Herrin added six rebounds.
“We didn’t play as well as we wanted to,” Braves coach Scott Ridge said afterward. “That says a lot about how good they are and how well coached they are.
“Anytime that we made mistakes, they made us pay. Our kids are a little bit young, a little bit small. So there are going to be some mistakes out there. They’re guys were in the right spots and they knew out to hurt us.”
The Eagles took a 21-16 lead into the locker room at halftime. Brennan’s eight points and six rebounds led the way for the home team, controlling things inside. Labus and Warner each added four points for Guerin Catholic, which led by as many as eight points — 8-0 — late in the first quarter.
South got off to a cold start offensively, hitting on just 22 percent of its field goal attempts (6 of 27) over the first two quarters.
Turner kept the Braves within striking distance, tossing in 13 points in the first half. He connected on 3 of 4 3-point shots, hitting one that brought the visitors to within 18-16 and was fouled on the play. He missed the free throw, however, which would have narrowed the margin to 18-17.
The Braves got as close as 23-21 midway through the third quarter. But Guerin Catholic soon pushed their lead back up to 10 at 34-24 on a drive by Rapp.
The lead was soon up to 16 points at 45-29 as Guerin outscored South 22-8 over the final minutes of the third quarter and the initial moments of the fourth.
“They’re better than us in the half-court game. If we could have gotten them in a really fast up-and-down game, it would have suited us a little better. But in a half-court, grind-it-out, possession-by-possession game, that favors them,” Ridge said.
