South strong out of gate in winning big

West Terre Haute — Terre Haute South scored 17 unanswered points Tuesday to start the game on West Vigo’s senior night for girls high school basketball, but the Vikings bounced back to close the first half by playing sound basketball.

South’s depth of talent wore down the Vikings for a 76-37 victory as Tasia Brewer led the Braves with 17 points. West Vigo senior Brooklyn Waters led the Vikings with 11 points, seven assists and three steals.

Five-foot-3 LaBrea Joyner set the tone early for South as the junior point guard and sophomore Kylie Fendrick made their first apperance in the starting lineup for coach Cara Stuckey.

Joyner’s third assist — she finished with six and a game-high four steals — set up Brewer to make it 10-0 just 2 minutes, 10 seconds into the game. Brewer, who hit 8-of-8 at the foul line, knocked down two at the stripe for the 17-0 lead.

Brooklyn Waters’ layup after the first of three first-half 3-pointers by Charity Lane pulled West Vigo within 20-11 early in the second quarter.

Then Joyner helped spark a 16-0 South run with a steal and a layup and an assist to Fendrick for a layup. Fendrick had 12 points for South, while Joyner scored 11.

“The last several games we’ve got off to an awful start. I changed things up tonight. That was our emphasis tonight, to get off to a good start. Thought we definitely did that tonight,” Stuckey said.

“Kylie does an all-around good job for us. We’ve tried to get her confidence back, it was down a little bit, but it’s good to see her coming around at the right time.”

West Vigo handled South’s pressure defense pretty well in the first half, making just six turnovers. They finished with 17.

“We played toe-to-toe for about 12 minutes or so and then they’re just so deep and [the Braves] were hitting shots,” West Vigo coach Ryan Easton said. “Their record’s not indicative of how good they are. They could win that [Class 4A Terre Haute North] sectional.”

West Vigo held Hannah Lee, an IPFW recruit, to four points, but Lee had 10 rebounds, two steals and three blocks.

“Hannah’s a big-time player. [Senior] Erin [Barton] did a good job guarding her, being physical with her. They’re hard to defend, all of them,” Easton said.

Waters, Barton, Cassidy Carlson and Mikaela Silcock played their final home game.

“We had some unforced errors. I took a lot of good things from it. That might be their last game on this floor, but it’s not the last game of their career. A lot of basketball left,” Easton said.
