Northview wrestling sectional: South second, sends 11 wrestlers to regional

BRAZIL — It took a while, but the Wabash Valley finally chalked up its first championship of the 2012 IHSAA wrestling sectional Saturday at Northview.

After the first six matches were won by wrestlers from Bloomington South (five) or Edgewood (one), Sullivan senior Jed Cox scored a 15-3 major decision over Bloomington South’s Jordan Castillo to emerge victorious in the 145-pound class and improve his record to 31-1.

“We worked all month for this very day,” Sullivan coach Roy Monroe told the Tribune-Star afterward. “We knew we had to capture a title coming in here. Anything less would have been a disappointment.

“I was giving my all,” emphasized Cox, who led 4-1 after the first period and 8-2 after the second period.

“Jed really impressed me this week,” Monroe continued. “He’s really grown in his knowledge of wrestling. He’s just a phenomenal athlete.”

After Cox’s triumph, the floodgates opened for Valley matsmen as Terre Haute South senior Tsali Lough (160), West Vigo senior Ben Bird (195), Northview senior Aaron See (220) and Northview junior Justin Sampson (285) claimed sectional titles.

Lough (37-2) built a 5-0 first-period advantage over Bloomington South’s Seth Seitzinger, then took an accidental thumb to the eye in the second period, forcing a brief stoppage. When action resumed, Lough wrestled well enough to hold on for an 8-3 victory.

“Since I’ve been in wrestling, hands get thrown around and you get poked in the eye a little bit,” he mentioned, “so I took a few seconds and got my sight back, then went back out and finished the match.”

Lough said he was still squinting in the third period.

“It was affecting me,” he admitted. “You just gotta wrestle through it.”

“Tsali wrestled a very smart match,” Terre Haute South coach Gabe Cook assessed. “He got an early lead on one of his best moves, then after that he stayed in good position and got the win.”

“Coach always says, ‘The best defense is a good offense,’” Lough added. “I just tried to keep my feet moving and always on the attack and make sure my opponent couldn’t do anything.”

Bird’s win was a come-from-behind 5-2 decision over Northview’s Jesse Miller, whom he had split with during the regular season. Bird trailed 1-0 heading into the third period.

“We were down 1-0 and Ben got a quick escape [early in the third period],” West Vigo coach Scott Rohrbach explained, “then Ben was able to score two on a scramble in the corner, then Jesse got away from us for a point. Then we had the takedown there at the end [for the final two points.”

This was Bird’s first sectional championship after posting runner-up finishes in the previous two seasons.

“It feels great,” acknowledged Bird, now 26-2 for the season.

Meanwhile, Northview coach Dan Mikesell got over that loss when he watched two Knights pull out victories in the final matches of the evening — See (36-3) on a pin over Bloomington South’s Zachary Dobos in 3:35 and Sampson (33-6) on a 6-2 decision over Bloomington South’s Guss Dajani.

“I thought Aaron wrestled a real tough match, real aggressive,” the Knights’ coach said. “He took control from the beginning and had a pretty dominant performance, in my opinion. On the pin, he did a front headlock to a near-side cradle, something that we work on quite a bit . . . and he just kinda overpowered him.

“For Justin, that’s the third time we’ve had to wrestle that kid and we’ve beat him all three times. I thought Justin wrestled real smart and scored his takedowns when he had the opportunity.”

The top four finishers in each weight class will advance to the Bloomington South individual regional next Saturday.

Bloomington South won the team competition with 294 points, easily outdistancing runner-up Terre Haute South (198) and third-place Northview (159.5) to earn the right to move on to the Greencastle team regional Wednesday.

South qualified 11 wrestlers for the individual regional.

“I’m happy with the number of kids advancing,” Cook insisted, “but you’re always looking for areas that you could have done better. I felt like there were a hand full of kids who were watching the last round [third-place and championship matches] and could have easily been on the mat.”

Mikesell has seven Northview athletes going to the regional.

“We’re pretty pleased with that,” he said. “We got a couple thirds, two seconds and two firsts. I think we’re set up well to have several guys move on to the semistate.”

Sullivan (six), Terre Haute North (six) and West Vigo (three) also will be represented in the regional.
