South girls stage epic rally to get past North

TERRE HAUTE — Terre Haute South’s girls basketball team needed a pick-me-up in oh so many ways. Missing its first eight shots and committing nine turnovers, the Braves found themselves in a massive 15-2 hole midway in the second quarter.

No problem.

Labrea Joyner got the Braves some needed momentum coming off the bench, then Tasia Brewer enjoyed a third quarter that will go down in North-South annals.

Joyner’s breaking of a lengthy field goal drought, then Brewer scoring the next 17 points in the third quarter, enabled Terre Haute South to topple Terre Haute North 46-35 for the second time this season, this time in a Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference girls game Friday at Hulman Center.

Oh yes, North exacerbated their chances of victory by misfiring on 20-of-35 free throws.

“We’re a team with slow starts, unfortunately,” South coach Cara Stuckey said. “Luckily we were able to get a good start in the second half.

“I told [the players] if we didn’t get a good start in the first three minutes of the second half …  North takes care of the ball too well, they’d take the air out and we would be in trouble. So we set our defense to bring us back and it did. Plus we hit some big shots.”

“South wanted it more than we did,” North coach Mike Allen said. “Tasia wanted to win more than my players did. [South] had people come out and step up … they hit 12-for-17 free throws, we missed 20. That sums up the whole ballgame basically.”

South’s first field goal was a baseline jumper by Joyner with 4:44 left in the first half. Trailing 21-6, Hannah Lee scored on a fast break at 1:42, then Joyner scored an old-fashioned 3-point play at the buzzer to get the Braves within 21-11 by intermission.

South connected on just 4-of-17 shots in the first half and committed 11 turnovers. North’s halftime lead could have been much larger, missing nine free throws in the first half.

Second half? A different story, with the exception of North continuing its struggles at the free throw stripe. Joyner hit a 3-pointer to get South off on the right foot, then Brewer lit up the scoreboard in a hurry.

The junior guard was a perfect 6-of-6 from the field, hitting all three of her 3-pointers and made 2-of-2 free throws. Brewer’s drive to the hoop put the Braves in the lead for the first time at 27-26 with 1:41 left in the third quarter.

“Tasia’s clutch, she wants the ball when we need big shots,” Stuckey said. “She’s not afraid to take the big shot and knock them down for us.”

South led 31-27 after three quarters, but then it turned into a typical North-South game for a while. North had opportunities to get the lead back in the fourth quarter, but got no closer than 33-32 after missing six of eight free throws.

North did not score a field goal for the final seven minutes, seven seconds. South’s Kylie Fendrick scored on a old-fashioned 3-point play at the 2:37 mark for a 40-34 lead. South scored the final six points of the game, ironically, all coming from the free throw stripe.

“Anytime you get in a high school basketball game and get to the [free throw] line 35 times, you think you’re going to win,” Allen noted. “We obviously didn’t capitalize there. Even if it’s not enough points to win, it changes the complexion of the game. It makes [South] do something different, allows us to do something different.”

“Something we have to work on is not fouling so much,” Stuckey added. “Because we’re fortunate tonight that North didn’t hit their free throws. If they’d hit their free throws, it’s definitely a different outcome.”

Brewer led South (10-9, 1-5 MIC) with 19 points, nine rebounds and three steals. Lee had just six points on 2-of-12 shooting, but did have nine rebounds and four blocked shots. Joyner finished with nine points and a pair of steals.

Adrienne Pritchard led North (11-9, 2-5 MIC) with 15 points, 13 rebounds, two steals, two blocks. Pritchard played a “big” part in limiting Lee’s scoring chances.

North was also playing without it’s leading scorer Nicole Anderson, out with a stress fracture of her foot.

“Nicole makes a difference, but that’s not an excuse,” Allen stated. “We matched up well with [South] without her. It’s about what’s between the ears sometimes. I don’t know that we were mentally tough enough tonight.”
