Putnamville —
Terre Haute North started the South Putnam Girls Track Sectional with a relay win and ended it with a relay win Tuesday, cruising to victory by almost 100 points. North secured its 29th girls track sectional title, which is best in the state.
The Patriots put up 184 to Greencastle’s 98 and Terre Haute South’s 95 points.
Greencastle’s Colleen Weatherford put up impressive performances to win the 1,600 and 800. Terre Haute North’s TaPring Goatee took the lead from Weatherford after 300 meters of the 800, but Weatherford put the hammer down with 150 meters to go to overtake Goatee in a race between two of the state’s elite runners.
Goatee still ran a career best time of 2 minutes, 16.37 seconds as Weatherford’s 2:13.36 was good for the win.
“Colleen’s an athlete and TaPring’s an athlete too. Just focused on getting TaPring ready for the 800, that’s where she has the best chance at the state meet,” North coach Mike Dason said.
Terre Haute South will send plenty of athletes to next week’s Evansville Regional as well. Tasia Brewer made the top four in both hurdles races. South’s 1,600 relay gave North all it wanted to cap the night, giving the Braves second. South’s 3,200 relay was third in 10:30.76, which was a season best by 29 seconds.
The Braves’ Nikki Thiede took runner-up in the 1,600 and 3,200, running times of 5:21.75 and 12:02.78.
“She wants to go to state in both. Times are going to have to improve,” South coach Ed Jarvis said.
Thiede was second to North’s Chanli Mundy in the 3,200, as Mundy won comfortably in 11:23.27.
Keirra Porter won the 100 hurdles for the Patriots in 13.12 seconds
North’s other winners were Jessi Conley in the 400 (1:00.38), Alissa Turpen in the discus (107 feet-11) and Rachel Gutish in the pole vault (10-6).
West Vigo’s Janelle Lucas won the 300 hurdles for the second straight year, running a time of 47.06 to win by more than two seconds over South Putnam’s Ariel Higgins.
“I ran a pretty good time. I feel like I’ve got a better shot this year at getting out at regional. I’m running better times this year,” Lucas said.
Northview sophomore Leanna Knight showed her bright future as a sprinter and long jumper, winning both events and helping the Knights to a regional berth in the 400 relay.
“I work on getting out of the blocks a lot and long jump. It’s great. Love long jump, love hitting the sand after a good jump,” said Knight, who leaped a season-best 16-11 1⁄2.
Northview coach Cole Schroer was pleased with his team’s fourth-place finish but especially with the strong day by Knight.
"Leanna's work ethic is ridiculous. She works harder than everybody and expects great things from herself. She should have a great regional too," Schroer said.

Goatee, Bertoli ran away with Spring Athlete of the Year
When honoring athletes after a season of excellence, the phrase “what might have been” doesn’t usually come up.
But in the case of Terre Haute South’s Jackson Bertoli and Terre Haute North’s TaPring Goatee – the Tribune-Star’s Athletes of the Year for spring sports – there’s an air of unfinished business despite obvious recent successes.

South runs into ‘buzzsaw’ at girls tennis semistate
Postmatch interviews don’t often begin with a coach and a reporter ready to blurt out the same word, but that was the case for Bill Blankenbaker and his interviewer Saturday morning after the Center Grove Semistate for girls high school tennis.
Unfortunately for Blankenbaker’s Terre Haute South team, that word was “buzzsaw.”
Greenwood’s Kawamoto twins made quick work of the top of the Braves’ singles lineup, so despite stellar efforts by both South doubles teams the Woodmen’s 3-2 victory didn’t seem all that close.
Greenwood moves on to Fishers, where it plays Floyd Central or Jasper on Friday in the state quarterfinals.
Also playing Friday, but at Park Tudor, will be South’s Miranda Camp and Nicole Howe, who reached the individual doubles finals for the second straight season by virtue of their 6-4, 6-2 win over the Greenwood team of Taylor Hudnall and Brittany Toney.
“It’s really exciting,” said Howe of the prospect of a second straight finals trip, “but I wish our team could’ve gone with us.”
