North Central, Owen Valley win Clabber Girl consolation games

WEST TERRE HAUTE — Despite a shaky free throw shooting effort in the first half, North Central gradually picked up a head of steam to defeat host team West Vigo 46-25 in the consolation round nightcap of the HI-99/Clabber Girl Classic girls high school basketball tournament on Friday.

In the consolation opener, Owen Valley proved by and far the cream of this foursome, utilizing runs of 32 and 27 unanswered points to throttle South Vermillion 84-22 in a mis-matchup of Western Indiana Conference rivals.

North Central overcame misfiring on 14 of 20 free throw attempts in the first half, leading from wire to wire against the Vikings. More importantly, they picked up a much-needed first victory, after opening the season 0-2.

“We just wanted to play four complete quarters,” explained North Central coach Gretchen Brown. “We feel we’ve played three good quarters and we’ve always had that one bad quarter that’s done us in. We just wanted to get back on track and I think the girls did it tonight.

“They went out from the get-go … that’s nice to see,” Brown said of her team’s performance. “I don’t know if we ever did that last year. We’ve not led from the beginning to the end.”

Megan Stone and Jocelyn Boyll led not only NC’s scoring, but helped the T-Birds to a huge 46-26 rebounding advantage. Stone scored 14 points with 11 rebounds, while Boyll had a double-double of 10 points and 11 boards. Amber Kemp also tallied 10 points.

“North Central just took it at us,” lamented WV coach Ryan Easton. “We came out lethargic. Just going through the motions. And never really did get out of it. I’m not sure what the deal was tonight.

“It’s disappointing because I know we’re much better than that … that’s what’s frustrating. The lack of mental toughness was there tonight.”

The Vikings never managed a foothold offensively, shooting just 23 percent from the field — only five percent (1 of 19) on 3-pointers. Klotz and freshman Brooklyn Waters led their scoring with just six points apiece.

In the opener, Owen Valley had little or no resistance from the Wildcats. The Patriots forced a staggering 39 South Vermillion turnovers and only allowed SV to attempt 37 shots — hitting just eight.
