Metro Roundup: Schnitker named assistant coach at Southern Indiana

Evansville — The University of Southern Indiana men’s basketball team announced the hiring of former Indiana State player Tyson Schnitker as assistant coach.

Schnitker joins assistant coach Aaron Brothers on head coach Rick Herdes’ staff.

Schnitker will make the transition from USI player to coach in 2008-09. He was fourth on the team in scoring with 10.1 points per game and led the squad with 3.3 assists per contest in his only season with the Eagles in 2007-08. The Robinson, Ill., native had a career-best 30 points against Drury and six assists in four different games.

Prior to playing at USI, Schnitker spent three seasons at Indiana State. He averaged 7.6 points and 2.1 assists per game in 79 appearances as a Sycamore.

Schnitker will be making the transition from player to coach for the second time in his career. He was a part-time assistant coach at Lincoln Trail College in 2006-07 before transferring to USI last year.

Schnitker earned a master’s degree in business administration from USI this past summer and a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Indiana State in 2007.
