TERRE HAUTE — Ideal weather conditions produced nice scores for high school girls golf teams Tuesday in the Terre Haute South Invitational at Rea Park.
South’s A team won with 330, the best score for a South team in Cara Stuckey's four years as coach.
Junior Sloane Engle was medalist with 79, her best score in an 18-hole match.
The Braves now have won two tournaments and took third in a third.
Jasper took second with 352, paced by Katy Schnarr’s 80, and Northview shot 378 to take third with Mandy Thomlinson pacing the Knights with 88.
Terre Haute North was fourth in the nine-team field with a season-best 382 and freshman Rachel Welker led the Patriots with 86.
Terre Haute South fielded a second team as Linton had to withdraw with school having started in the Greene County district. The South Black team was fifth with 397 paced by sophomore Caylee Walburn with 92.
Greencastle shot 437 for sixth followed by West Vigo with 453, South Putnam 454, and Cloverdale 470.
South, North and Northview both were in their second tournament of the week. All three were in the Mooresville Invitational on Monday at Eagle Pine.
South and Northview each have been in four tournaments in the first two weeks of the season.
Three players besides Engle were in the 80s for the Braves. Alana Whitlock, playing in the fifth slot, had a career-best 83 while Kelsey Fuqua and Katelyn Gosnell each shot 84.
Stuckey said early tournaments reflect the work put in by players during the summer.
“It is good to see the players rewarded for those efforts,” Stuckey said.
Engle has been low or tied for low in three matches for South. She says her game is “a lot stronger” especially her putting.
The Braves return to Rea Park for a match with North Central on Thursday and play Northview at Forest Park next Tuesday.
Josh Trout is in his second season as coach at Northview and was “proud” of the team's efforts with the Knights having their best score of the year.
“I think each girl had a season best too. I like the progress made by the team,” Trout said
Abe Nasser is in his second year as the coach at North and said Tuesday's score not only was a season best but probably was best in his two years.
He said expectations rose for Welker, a freshman, after she shot 79 at Hulman Links last week.
“She can compete with everyone,” Nasser said. “We need to work on mental toughness, demeanor on the course and body language.”
North will meet Northview in its next match next week at Hulman Links. Northview plays Cloverdale and Linton on Thursday at Forest Park.
West Vigo made its season debut in the tournament and is at Sullivan on Thursday. "We will be better," says coach Rick Petty.
