TERRE HAUTE — Terre Haute South scored a three-peat Tuesday in boys high school golf at Rea Park at the Vigo County Championship in nearly ideal weather conditions.
Coach Chris Cassell’s team fired a 304 paced by senior Ryan Shelley who took individual medalist honors with a 3-under-par 69. The Braves shot 310 to win the Riddell National Bank at Forest Park in their only other match as two other matches were called off due to poor weather.
Terre Haute North carded 326 for second and West Vigo shot 387. All three teams will meet again Saturday at Hulman Links in the Terre Haute North-South Invitational while South meets Owen Valley today at Rea Park.
Shelley went 33-36 in recording his best 18-hole score. He had seven birdies in the round, finishing with four birdies and four bogeys on the back nine.
“The course played well. The greens were fast … and the fact that it wasn’t windy was a big factor,” said the 2006 junior city champ who was No. 3 or No. 4 golfer last year on South’s team that tied for second in the state.
His goal for the team is simple.
“I want us to get back to state again and to make the second day would be great,” said Shelley. He’d also like for the Braves to repeat as Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference champs with the tournament being played at Hulman Links again.
Shelley said he plans to attend Purdue.
“I was pleased to see Ryan shoot that score. I knew he could do something like that,” said Cassell.
Phillip Myers, a junior, was second for South while Ian White and Justin Miller of North each had 79.
Evan Miller led the Vikings with 89.
Cassell said Saturday’s competition will present a challenge for his team since the South players do not practice at Hulman Links. Chuck Payne, the North coach, echoed his sentiments, noting only one of his players has broken 80 in an 18-hole match.
“I’m not that unhappy with our score today. It’s hard to beat a team when somebody shoots 69,” said the coach.
Jacob Brown, who had West Vigo’s top score in the county match last year, was unable to participate Tuesday due to an injury.
Thirteen schools will be represented in Saturday’s match with tee times being from noon to 2:30 p.m.

North boys move up to 13th in golf state finals
Early Wednesday morning, Terre Haute North senior Ryan Baker and coach Abe Nasser headed out to the Legends of Indiana Golf Course for a range session.
Baker wasn’t happy with the 85 he shot in Tuesday’s first round of the IHSAA boys golf state finals.
“He was frustrated,” Nasser said.
Problem solved. Baker bounced back with a 2-over 74 Wednesday, helping the Patriots improve their team score by seven strokes.
The Patriots shot 304 as a team Wednesday, giving them a two-day score of 615, good for 13th place in the 15-team field. -

Unfortunately for Blankenbaker’s Terre Haute South team, that word was “buzzsaw.”
Greenwood’s Kawamoto twins made quick work of the top of the Braves’ singles lineup, so despite stellar efforts by both South doubles teams the Woodmen’s 3-2 victory didn’t seem all that close.
Greenwood moves on to Fishers, where it plays Floyd Central or Jasper on Friday in the state quarterfinals.
Also playing Friday, but at Park Tudor, will be South’s Miranda Camp and Nicole Howe, who reached the individual doubles finals for the second straight season by virtue of their 6-4, 6-2 win over the Greenwood team of Taylor Hudnall and Brittany Toney.
“It’s really exciting,” said Howe of the prospect of a second straight finals trip, “but I wish our team could’ve gone with us.”
