WEST TERRE HAUTE —
Host West Vigo was just a few outs away from a potential victory to open its Western Indiana Conference high school softball season Tuesday night, but gave up three unearned runs in the top of the sixth inning and eventually lost 5-4 to visiting Owen Valley.
Alicyn Woodward was 3 for 3, raising her batting average to nearly .800, but was the hard-luck losing pitcher for the Vikings, and Ciara McClain kept her average near the .500 mark with a pair of hits. Woodward didn’t allow an earned run — but Owen Valley’s pitcher didn’t either, according to coach Cherish Easton of West Vigo.
