Ben Davis gets away from North in second quarter

INDIANAPOLIS — Terre Haute North couldn't come up with enough big plays when it counted in the first half, dropping to 2-3 on the season with a 30-7 loss to second-ranked Ben Davis Friday night.

Coach Chris Barrett's team played the Giants to a scoreless draw in the first quarter but then gave up 17 quick points just before halftime.

Touchdowns by Kobi Elmore on an 11-yard pass from quarterback Kyle Castner and Malcolm Fogle on a 15-yard pass from Castner over the final six minutes of the quarter put the Patriots in hole that they had a hard time digging themselves out of.

Bryce Phelps' 30-yard field goal was sandwiched in-between Castner's two scoring passes as Ben Davis took control of the game. The Giants added a 15-yard touchdown run by Fogle in the third quarter and Phelps added kicks from 30 and 38 yards to close out the home team's scoring barrage.

Terre Haute North punched across its lone score of the game midway through the fourth quarter as quarterback Chris Barrett fired a quick strike over the middle to tight end Calvin Blank with 8:36remaining in the game.

But it was too little, too late for a Patriots squad that went toe-to-toe with Ben Davis for most of the evening.

"Overall, I don't know if my gameplan was all that great," Coach Barrett said afterwards. "We wanted to go right at them and then go vertical with play action. And were so close on so many things. We didn't catch the breaks that we should have caught on some of those vertical routes. Those kind of things and with that kind of game plan against that kind of fast team, it can make or break you.

"I didn't call a very good game. I want to take a lot of that pressure off of those kids because that score is not indicative of the kind of team we have by any means. Offensively we just didn't do very well and a lot of that came down to just the game plan and the play calling and not catching some breaks where we we need to."

The Patriots coach also lamented the time his defense spent on the field against a pretty athletic Ben Davis team.

"I don't think we were intimidated. I think my defense got tired because we just had way too many three and outs. Obviously that's one (game) we'd like to have back. Ben Davis is a good football team and you have to play well to beat a team like that, especially at their place," Barrett said.

"When you're playing a team like at and you're battling, you've got to make some things happen. And just never got that. We never got over the hump. We've got a lot of football left and I feel good about our team. We just have to regroup. This is really the first batch of adversity we've faced. Across the board we can match up with (Ben Davis). We just didn't do it (Friday night)."
