TERRE HAUTE — Despite an icy wind chill and snow on the ground, 52 participants took the Plunge for Special Olympics Indiana at the 2010 Polar Plunge on Feb. 13 on the campus of Indiana State University. More than $7,100 was raised for Special Olympics at the second annual Indiana State event, with online donations still coming in.
“We were very pleased with the success of the Indiana State Plunge event,” said Scott Furnish, director of special events for Special Olympics Indiana. “Overall, things ran very smoothly, and we really appreciate the efforts of representatives from Indiana State University who volunteered to spearhead the event. We’d also like to thank members of the Indiana State chapters of Alpha Sigma Alpha and Pi Kappa Alpha, who assisted with the event.”
Michael Krieger of Terre Haute took home the prize for the best costume, decked out as cupid, complete with a bow and arrow.
The award for the most money raised by an individual went to Jodi Moan, county coordinator for Special Olympics Indiana-Vigo County. Moan raised $675 for Special Olympics Indiana.
The ladies of Alpha Sigma Alpha took home the awards for the most money raised by a team, generating $1,470 for Special Olympics Indiana, and the award for the largest campus group, with 16 members taking the Plunge.
As Special Olympics Indiana’s signature fundraising event, the Polar Plunge invites Hoosier residents to be “freezin’ for a reason” by raising funds and awareness for adults and children with intellectual disabilities.
