Rex to Strike Out Breast Cancer at Friday baseball game

Terre Haute Rex is planning a Strike Out Breast Cancer game this Friday. Gates open at 5:30 p.m., with the game at 7:05.

Breast cancer survivors can pick up free tickets at the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Wabash Valley Affiliate office in the Meadows Shopping Center. It’s open from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Fridays.

General admission to the game is $5.

Oral, head, neck patient-directed self-help group to meet

Support for People with Oral and Head and Neck Cancer Inc., a patient-directed self-help organization, now has a chapter in Terre Haute.

SPOHNC is a nonprofit organization dedicated to meeting the emotional, physical and humanistic needs of oral and head and neck cancer patients and their caregivers.

SPOHNC chapters stage monthly meetings offering information, support and encouragement to newly diagnosed patients, survivors, family members and friends in a friendly and non-threatening forum. Survivors discuss their situations, experiences, coping strategies and hopes. Educational programs are also part of the SPOHNC program.

Meetings will be conducted on the third Tuesday of every month.

The next meeting is planned for 4:30 p.m. Aug. 21 at the Hux Cancer Center, Beech Street Conference Room — Lower Level, 1711N. 6 1/2 St.

Get free vision screening at National Night Out event in August

The Minority Health Coalition of Vigo County, Vigo County Lions Club and the Wabash Independent Living & Learning Center Inc. will offer free vision screenings during the National Night Out event from 5 to 8 p.m. on Aug. 7 in Fairbanks Park.  

Macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma are the leading causes of vision loss among residents in the Wabash Valley. Early detection can be a key to treating these vision robbers.

Race for the Cure volunteer open house coming up July 29

Learn how you can volunteer for the cure at the Wabash Valley Susan G. Komen for the Cure volunteer open house from 1 to 3 p.m. July 29 at the Wabash Valley Susan G. Komen for the Cure offices in the Meadows Shopping Center.  

Lorrie Heber, chairperson for the Sept. 29 Race for the Cure event, and volunteer chair Abby Floyd will be available to talk about volunteers needed for the Race. Jeri Humphrey, registration chair, will talk about registration and shirt volunteers needed to get ready for the race.

A sign-up schedule will be available.
