Parkinson’s talk will focus on family

TERRE HAUTE — The value of family support for people coping with Parkinson’s disease will be discussed at a public gathering Friday.

Kathy Ginter, coordinator for the Fitness for Life program at Indiana State University, will speak to the Terre Haute Parkinson’s Support Group from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday in Westminster Village at 1120 Davis Drive. The meeting is free and open to all.

Ginter holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology and physical education from ISU, a master’s from Purdue, and a doctorate in motor behavior and sport psychology from the University of Tennessee.

Parkinson’s patients deal with a loss of mobility, muscle rigidity, slowness of movement, speech difficulties and tremors in the limbs. Their families are crucial to the patients’ access and participation in therapies, as well as medicinal treatments.

The disease afflicts more than 1 million Americans. No cure is known, but medicine and exercises can slow its progression.

For more information, contact support group organizer Loyal Bishop at (812) 232-3207.
