Girl Scouts create online magazine

INDIANAPOLIS — Last October, more than 1,500 teen girls from around the world converged on Indianapolis to explore leadership through health issues at the 2008 Girl Scout Leadership Institute. At the close of the Institute, girls were challenged to return to their communities and take action on what they had learned.

In response to the challenge issued, 30 teen Girl Scouts from central Indiana have created QUIRKz, an online quarterly magazine designed to address healthy living practices for middle and high school-aged girls. The mission of QUIRKz is to highlight the culture, history, talents, goals, accomplishments, relationships and quirks of the young women in central Indiana. By shining a spotlight on the teen girls’ spirit, the 30 girls responsible for the magazine have created an all-inclusive, online healthy living educational opportunity for their peers.

QUIRKz focuses on developing positive physical and emotional health practices in its readers through articles, written and edited by teen girls, complemented by Girl Scout educational materials.

The Fall 2009 issue of QUIRKz can be found at www.girlscoutsindiana.org/

Girl Scouts of Central Indiana serves more than 44,000 girls in 45 counties across central Indiana. Founded in 1912, Girl Scouts of the USA is the pre-eminent leadership development organization for girls with 3 million girl and adult members.
