Walk to Stop Diabetes is Sunday

INDIANAPOLIS — Hoosiers with diabetes will have a special place of honor at this year’s Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes on Sunday at Celebration Plaza in downtown Indianapolis.

The annual event brings together the diabetes community from across the state to raise funds and awareness to help change the future of diabetes by fueling the American Diabetes Association’s research, education and advocacy work in Indiana.

Known as Red Striders, these celebrated Step Out participants are Hoosiers with all forms of diabetes, including type 1, type 2 and gestational diabetes.

“Red Striders are the heartbeat of the Step Out Walk,” said Jennifer Pferrer, executive director with the American Diabetes Association-Indiana Area. “These brave Hoosiers are fighting diabetes, day in and day out, and the Step Out Walk is a chance to recognize them, honor them and celebrate their endurance in the lifelong journey of diabetes management. Last year, at least 287 Red Striders participated in Indiana’s Step Out Walk. We’re aiming to recruit at least 500 Red Striders from all parts of the state for this year’s event.”

Hoosiers with diabetes can register to walk and either form a team of their own or join Team Red, a pre-established team made up of other Step Out participants who have diabetes, along with their friends and family members. More information about Red Striders and Team Red is available at www.

diabetes.org/inredstriders.

This year’s event offers both 5K and two-mile routes along the Central Canal. This non-competitive event is open to participants of all ages. Step Out also offers an interactive Health & Wellness Festival with food, games, prizes, music and activities for children and families.

Registration is available now at www.diabetes.org/

indywalk or by calling 1-888-342-2383, ext. 6738.
