COPD Wellness Fair planned for Oct. 24

TERRE HAUTE —

The Respiratory Therapy Department at Union Hospital will offer a free COPD Wellness Fair from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Oct. 24 in the lower-level atrium of Union East.

COPD, also known as emphysema or chronic bronchitis, is a progressive disease that makes it harder and harder to breathe. As people get older, many assume that feeling out of breath while doing normal activities and wheezing are just signs of aging. But these symptoms could be early signs of COPD — and there’s a way for people to find out if they might be at risk.

The COPD Wellness Fair will include a free screening to determine if an individual may be at risk for COPD. Those already diagnosed with COPD are encouraged to stop by and become more knowledgeable about ways to manage and treat the disease.

The event will include three presentations starting at 10 a.m., Exercise and COPD; at noon, Cooking for COPD; and at 2 p.m., Getting to Know Your COPD Medication.

Free screenings will be available including a COPD screen, spirometry, Alpha-1 testing, blood pressure checks and pulse-ox and carbon dioxide check. In addition, a pharmacist and nurse practitioner will be on-hand to answer questions about the health screen or medications.

The Vigo County Health Department will be on-site from 1 to 4 p.m. to give flu shots for a nominal fee. There will be various booths offering free information on medication assistance, home oxygen supplies, home health aids, flu prevention, smoking cessation and more.
