Great Strides walk for Cystic Fibrosis is Sunday

TERRE HAUTE — On Sunday, the Great Strides walk for CF will take place at Hawthorn Park in Vigo County.

Registration will begin at 12:30 p.m. and the walk will start at 1:30 p.m. All walkers are welcome to participate with any size donation. However, anyone collecting $100 or more in donations will receive a free T-shirt. Fazoli’s is providing lunch to walkers.

Cystic Fibrosis is a life-threatening genetic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system of about 30,000 children and adults in the U.S. More than 10 million Americans are symptomless carriers of the defective CF gene.

The latest drug, Kalydeco, has just been approved by the FDA. It’s new approach promises the best hope for a more normal life for as many as 90 percent of CF patients by 2017. Dollars are needed to complete the studies and trials that are ready to be funded. Indiana’s commitment this year is $1.33 million, while Terre Haute’s goal is $58,000.

About 90 cents of every tax-deductible dollar collected by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation goes to research and education. Anyone wishing to donate can visit www.cff.org/great_strides.

For more information, call 1-800-622-4826 or (812) 234-3690.
