Champions for Smokefree Pregnancies workshop set

A free workshop for health care providers, social service professionals and other health advocates, Champions for Smokefree Pregnancies in Terre Haute, is scheduled for 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. March 14 in the Landsbaum Center for Health Education. The event is hosted by CHANCES for Indiana Youth and Vigo County Tobacco Prevention Coalition in partnership with Promoting Smokefree Pregnancies in Indiana.

In Indiana, about 17 percent of pregnant women smoke, nearly twice the national average. In Vigo County, more than 20 percent of expectant mothers smoke. Smoking during pregnancy is associated with a number of negative physical and mental outcomes including premature birth, low birth weight, asthma, and problems with learning and reading.

The March 14 event will introduce participants to effective tools and techniques for providing tobacco cessation support to their patients and clients, with special emphasis on pregnant women. Participants also will hear from Dr. Robert LaLouche, a board certified obstetrician-gynecologist from UAP Clinic, and Carrie Evans, coordinator of the Prenatal Substance Use Prevention Program at the Union Hospital Family Medicine Center.

The PSPI coalition, a statewide partner of the Indiana State Department of Health Tobacco Prevention and Cessation Commission, is comprised of agencies and individuals across Indiana dedicated to reducing the prevalence of smoking among women of childbearing age, particularly during pregnancy.

Registration for the event is free but required. Participants must register by March 13 online at www.formstack.com/forms/smokefree-terrehaute or by calling Alia Hazel at 812-232-5190, ext. 64.
