Low Vision Expo planned June 14 at Vincennes University

TERRE HAUTE — Generations and The Wabash Independent Living and Learning Center of Terre Haute will sponsor the 2012 Low Vision Expo from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 14 at Vincennes University’s Green Activities Center.

The Expo will offer free resources for individuals and families dealing with macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, cataracts and all types of low vision. The Sullivan Lion’s Club will offer free vision screenings for all ages.

A free lunch will be served and David Bode with En-Vision America, Inc. will be the guest speaker. To RSVP for the Low Vision Expo, call Generations at 1 (800) 742-9002 or (812) 888-5880.

Vision impairment is a serious public health concern among older adults, affecting more than 2.9 million people in the United States, according to the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion.

In addition to the Expo, the WILL Center is offering a low-vision program to help older adults in Knox County who are blind/visually impaired with their independent living skills, personal skills and community resources. This program is designed to assist visually challenged residents with maintaining their independence and dignity so they can remain in their own homes.

This service is offered free to individuals in Knox County and surrounding Indiana counties. Participants must be visually impaired or blind and at least 55 years of age.

For more information on the low-vision program, visit The WILL Center’s website at www.thewillcenter.org, or contact Danny Wayne Beemer at 1-877-915-9455 ext. 205 or dannywayne@thewillcenter.org.
