World MS Day celebrated on May 30

TERRE HAUTE — Multiple Sclerosis affects the lives of over 2 million people around the world (an estimated 10,000 to 14,000 MS sufferers live in Indiana). World MS Day was launched in 2009 and is spearheaded by the Multiple Sclerosis International Federation. Last year, events took place in more than 73 countries to raise awareness of this auto-immune disease which can cause symptoms ranging from mild numbness to pain or paralysis.

The International Federation’s effort this year surrounds the theme of “Living with MS,” and is called “1,000 faces of MS.” Those who wish to participate are encouraged to fill out their own digital postcard profile at www.worldmsday.org. As stated on their website: “1,000 Faces of MS was created to bring together stories, messages and support for people living with and affected by MS. It is an opportunity to tell your story, to share it with strangers, as well as friends, and to join the global movement of people working to raise awareness of the disease.”

The gathering of these digital postcards regarding what living with MS really means — filled out voluntarily by those whose lives are affected by MS — ends on WMSD when it will go public in celebration of the day.

Those wishing to participate in the online community can sign up now at MSconnection.org. This includes not only those facing MS themselves, but family members and other caretakers as well.

In conjunction with the international efforts, the Indiana chapter of the National MS Society has been hard at work on their own annual awareness campaign.

“The main push this year [in Indiana] is a new awareness campaign called MS Kills Connection — Connection Kills MS. This campaign focuses on the ways in which the connections we form with one another are stronger than the disease,” stated Amanda Shelley, public relations and marketing manager for the Indiana State Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. “As a part of this campaign, the Society has launched a new on-line community designed to help people who care about MS connect with one another more easily and more privately. The social media platform is similar to Facebook, LinkedIn, etc., but allows more anonymity than those platforms.”

In March (12-18), Indiana celebrated its own MS Awareness Week. Locally, awareness and fundraising efforts occurred throughout the week at local businesses by individuals planning to donate during this year’s Walk MS. Funds/donations will continue to be collected until the annual Walk MS: Wabash Valley, to be staged this year at St. Mary-of-the Woods College on Sept. 15. Funds collected will go toward both research in finding a cure for MS, as well as toward supporting individuals facing the disease living in Indiana.
