Planned Parenthood fundraiser looks at history of birth control

TERRE HAUTE — A Readers Theatre performance that tells the history of the birth control movement in the U.S. from 1910 to 1938 will be featured at the Stand With Planned Parenthood fundraiser set for 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the First Unitarian Universalist Congregation church at 1875 S. Fruitridge Ave.

Sonny Crawford is directing “Tell Jake to Sleep on the Roof,” which includes actual letters sent to Margaret Sanger asking her to help them learn how to prevent another pregnancy. Sanger is credited with leading the birth control movement for more than 50 years, beginning as a young nurse working in the tenements of New York City. Sanger worked to change the laws at both the state and federal level. Until a Supreme Court decision in 1936, it was illegal even for doctors to explain or even inform their patients about contraception. Two years later the Supreme Court legalized birth control, although states could choose to pass laws to forbid it.

The event will include door prizes, a silent auction and desserts as well as the performance. The suggested donation for the event is $30.
