Hospital sponsors marrow donor registration drive

TERRE HAUTE — Each year, 5,000 patients in need of a bone marrow transplant go without one. On May 10, Paris Community Hospital/Family Medical Center will host a “Be The Match” bone marrow donor registration drive in celebration of National Hospital Week.

The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Paris in the Family Medical Center parking lot. It will feature a drive-through lunch for $5, or $4 for those who register as a donor. Attendees will have the option of choosing a hamburger or hotdog with chips, cookie, and a drink.

Everyone who registers will be added to the national Be The Match marrow donor registry. The donation process takes about 15 minutes and involves a simple mouth swab and minimal paperwork. Donors must be ages 18 to 60 and meet medical guidelines.

There are 18.5 million potential bone marrow donors on registries around the world. Every year 10,000 patients need a marrow transplant. If you register at the hospital event and are later found to be a match, the process is usually quite simple. In fact, 75 percent of donations consist of a non-surgical procedure, requiring little more than an IV. The other 25 percent of donations consist of a surgical outpatient procedure in which doctors withdraw liquid marrow from the back of your pelvic bone.

Those who are unable to attend the drive but would like to help can make a monetary donation or join the registry online. To register for Be The Match online, go to marrow.org and click on Join the Registry. Online registration is available through May 20. When prompted, enter the code “Paris” to register without paying a fee. It only takes three simple steps: (1) Confirm that you meet the guidelines, (2) Complete the online form and order your registration kit, and (3) Follow the instructions in your kit to collect a swab of cheek cells and return the kit. Additionally, people may simply make a monetary donation by going to marrow.org.
