Dine with a Doc at Senior Center

TERRE HAUTE — Senior Education Ministries, Inc. has scheduled Dine with a Doc from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Wabash Senior Citizen’s Center at 300 S. 5th St. in Terre Haute.

Dine with a Doc is a free event that welcomes the local senior public to hear the doctor of the month present an educational topic while attendees enjoy a complimentary meal. You do not need to be a member of the Senior Center to come and participate. Just bring a questioning mind, an appetite and perhaps a friend. Each doctor has graciously donated this time in effort to listen, hear and answer your questions while sharing a meal with you.

The Dine with a Doc program was designed to allow the seniors to get out of their homes, fellowship with their peers, extend their available financial resources, promote enhanced living and educate them (from a preventive standpoint) with the goal of ensuring their quality of life and providing them with the resources and information to make an informed decision.

Dr. Steven Maynard will be the guest doctor. Maynard serves as assistant professor of neurology with Indiana University School of Medicine. He has staff privileges at Union Hospital and Terre Haute Regional Hospital.  Maynard is a published author, noted physician in the Wabash Valley and well versed in neurological diseases.

His presentation will focus on Parkinson’s disease, a disorder that affects nerve cells, or neurons, in a part of the brain that controls muscle movement. At least 500,000 people are believed to suffer from Parkinson’s disease, and about 50,000 new cases are reported annually in the United States. These figures are expected to increase as the average age of the population increases. The disorder appears to be slightly more common in men than women. The average age of onset is about 60.

A question and answer period will follow his discussion.

Lunch will be provided courtesy of Southwood Health and Rehabilitation Center

Vince McFarland, pastor of Maryland Community Church, will give the opening prayer and devotion at the beginning of the program. There will be various health care providers present to share information about their services and provide door prizes for participants to win.

A free wellness clinic also is provided at every Dine with a Doc.

Seating is limited and reservations are required. Call (812) 232-7575 or (812) 917-4970.
