TERRE HAUTE — The Vigo County Sheriff’s Department, along with the Drug Enforcement Administration and its national and community partners, will give the public another opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, the agencies will stage the fourth National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day. The Vigo County Sheriff’s Department at 201 Cherry St., in Terre Haute, will serve as the site for Wabash Valley area residents. The service is free and anonymous; no questions asked. Last October, Americans turned in more than 188.5 tons of prescription drugs at nearly 5,327 sites operated by more than 3,945 of the DEA’s state and local law enforcement partners. This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are high — more Americans currently abuse prescription drugs than the number of those using cocaine, hallucinogens and heroin combined, according to the 2009 National Survey on Drug Use and Health. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet.
