WIC, Baesler’s teaming up for supermarket tour

TERRE HAUTE — Beginning July 3 and continuing throughout the month, the Vigo County Women, Infants and Children program and Baesler’s Market will be partnering to stage a supermarket tour to show area families using WIC’s Special Supplemental Nutrition Program how to make healthy choices at the store on a limited budget.

During the tour, dubbed Shopping Matters for WIC Parents, participants will get plenty of hands-on practice as they learn how to find WIC foods at the store and maximize the amount of produce they get for their WIC fruit and vegetable vouchers.

Tour organizers Brooke Wilkinson and Melissa Bennett cited the growing need for families to learn how to make the best possible use of their resources when shopping for food in this difficult economy.

Share Our Strength’s Cooking Matters, nationally sponsored by the ConAgra Foods Foundation and Walmart, developed Shopping Matters for WIC Parents based on input from experts on the WIC program and research showing that careful food shopping practices — such as price comparison and nutrition label use — are associated with measures of better dietary quality. The program aims to promote real changes to food shopping habits by creating a dynamic learning experience for WIC families.

The Vigo County Women, Infants and Children’s Nutrition Program of the Western Indiana Community Action Agency Inc. provide supplemental nutritious foods, nutrition education, simple health screening, and health and social service agency referrals to eligible pregnant women, new mothers, infants and children up to age 5.

The WIC program is open to individuals in the categories mentioned above who meet income guidelines, are Indiana residents and are determined by health professionals to be at nutritional risk. The checks for supplemental foods include milk, eggs, cheese, juice, dry or canned beans, fish, peanut butter, whole grain breads, tortillas, rice, fresh fruits and vegetables, and baby foods and formula.

The tour will be at Baesler’s Market. Advanced registration is required. For more information, contact the Vigo County WIC office, Western Indiana Community Action Agency Inc. at 705 S. Fifth St. in Terre Haute or call (812) 232-6306.
