Paris hospital’s Honor Guard recognizes fellow nurses

PARIS, IL — Paris Community Hospital/Family Medical Center has implemented a new program that recognizes and pays homage to men and women who have committed their lives to nursing.

The PCH/FMC Nursing Honor Guard pays tribute to local registered nurses and licensed practical nurses upon their deaths. The tributes are modeled after a program established at Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes.

“People choose nursing as a career because they want to help people and make a difference in someone’s life,” said Rachel Massey, a nurse and staff development/compliance specialist at PCH/FMC. “The Nursing Honor Guard is an opportunity to show appreciation to our fellow nurses. These compassionate individuals have dedicated their lives to caring for the sick at the most vulnerable points in their lives.”

The Honor Guard’s special recognition is performed in several ways using the “Nightingale Tribute,” which was developed in 2003 by the Kansas State Nurses Association to honor deceased nurses. The tribute gets its name from Florence Nightingale, who was the founder of modern nursing.

During their tribute, Honor Guard members stand at the casket and display the symbolic Nightingale lamp with a single white candle to acknowledge the individual’s dedication to the nursing profession. They also recite a roll call in the nurse’s honor.

While standing guard at the casket, at either the gravesite or at a special service, they recite a special prayer called “The Nurse Was There.” At the conclusion of the service, the Honor Guard places a white flower on the casket as a symbol of appreciation to their nursing colleague.

At the family’s request, the PCH/FMC Nursing Honor Guard will pay tribute to any registered nurse or licensed practical nurse in Edgar County or the surrounding community. For more information call Massey at 217-465-2606, ext. 320, or Leslie Brown at 217-465-2606, ext. 570.
