Each year more than 12,000 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer and nearly 4,000 women die from the disease, according to the National Cervical Cancer Coalition.
Cervical cancer is largely preventable and lives can be saved by raising public awareness. National Cervical Health Awareness Month encourages women to schedule a Pap screening and become aware of the risks associated with HPV infection.
Cervical cancer is most often caused by a common sexually transmitted virus called the human papillomavirus. Because the viruses can cause slow-growing cancer, people who have been in longtime monogamous relationships may discover they have cervical cancer or another cancer associated with HPV decades after first contracting the virus.
Health Connection of Pace Community Action Agency Inc. encourages cervical health awareness for prevention and early detection of cervical cancer.
“Pace performs the gynecological screening for cancer identification as well as providing the HPV vaccine,” said Michelle Pitcher, Health Connection manager.
Women can greatly reduce their cervical cancer risk by getting a Pap smear and HPV vaccine. The Pap smear is a highly effective cervical cancer screening tool, detecting abnormal cervical changes long before they become cancerous.
