Flutist highlights Women in Jazz

Nationally recognized jazz flutist Galen Abdur-Razzaq will present an interactive musical program highlighting the contributions of women in jazz from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday in the Worx lounge of Hulman Union at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. The event is free and open to the community.

Abdur-Razzaq will discuss the five pillars of jazz: melody, harmony, rhythm, syncopation and improvisation, and give a demonstration of how those influence jazz.

The performance is part of Rose-Hulman’s celebration of Black History Month and leads into National Women’s History Month, observed in March.

“Women’s Education–Women’s Empowerment” is the theme of this year’s celebration of women’s contributions in many areas of life.

Abdur-Razzaq has performed both domestically and internationally for more than 30 years. He is a former student of the Berklee College of Music in Boston and a graduate of Rutgers University. He holds a master’s degree in fine arts and education and is an arranger, composer, director, educator and writer.

He has performed and recorded with some of the world’s greatest artists, including Billy Taylor, Sonny Phillips, Gwen Guthrie, Eddie Gladden and Jimmy Heath.
