SULLIVAN —
The 56th Annual Sullivan Rotary Club Corn Festival is in full swing in downtown Sullivan.
The festival continues through Saturday around the square. Festivities include free music nightly, carnival rides, fair food and multiple vendors that cover the square lawn to promote a family friendly atmosphere. The Corn Eating Contest, free Rotary Corn Feed, parade and Turtle Derby will take place on Saturday.
Amusements will be provided by Luehrs’ Ideal Rides and be open nightly.
The Tim Olson Futurity Turtle Derby will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the parade reviewing stand. Prior to the race, backers buy a chance on a turtle for $10 or a special deal of $16 for two.
Turtles compete in heats of eight contestants each; with the number of heats dependent upon how many backers buy turtles. Winners of each heat will receive a gift certificate from Henry Bobe’s Trattoria Italiano.
The parade will be Saturday at 1 p.m. on Section Street. The Parade Reviewing Stand will have a new location this year at the old Mary Sherman Hospital parking lot. The theme of this year’s Sullivan Rotary Corn Festival Parade is “Hats Off to Farmers.”
The Corn Eating Contest is also a popular attraction, both for participants and spectators. The contest is divided into age and gender groups, and each contestant is given 15 minutes to see how many ears of boiled corn he or she can eat. Winners will be given prizes. A traveling team trophy will be given for the team competition.
The annual tradition of the Corn Feed will take place on Saturday after the parade on the courthouse square.
All are invited for free ears of corn with the fixings, along with free soda. More than 1,000 ears of corn will be given out.
The Corn Festival Concert Series includes music from well-known bands on the west side of the square. The band schedule is:
• Wright Brothers Band — 7 to 10 p.m. today — The Wright Brothers Band is a total package: tight harmonies, flawless instrumentation and humor in a well-paced, polished and wide-ranging show that’s sure to please audiences of any age or musical taste. Visit www.wrightbrothersband.

• The Van-Dells — 7 to 10 p.m. Friday — The Van-Dells are “The Nation’s No. 1 Rock ’n’ Roll Review.” This fun, fast-paced show begins in the 1950s and runs through the ’60s.
Backed-up by a five piece band, the shows are broken into segments like a two-act play. Dressed in letter sweaters, The Van-Dells combine comedy with songs from the rock ’n’ roll era of the ’50s. In the second act they take the audience on a nostalgic trip through the “glitter and gold” period that made the ’60s famous.
In case of rain, The Van–Dells concert will move into the Sullivan High School Auditorium,
