Brazil Concert Band to perform at Scottish Rite Cathedral

TERRE HAUTE — The Brazil Concert Band, under the direction of Matthew S. Huber, will present “An American Portrait” at 3 p.m. Nov. 18 at the Terre Haute Scottish Rite Cathedral at Eighth and Ohio streets.

The Scottish Rite and Brazil Concert Band team up annually for this free concert that allows Wabash Valley residents to witness the former Hippodrome Theater which inspired John Philip Sousa to write the management about how pleased he was with the acoustics during a performance here of his famous traveling band.

The 155-year-old Brazil Concert Band was established only four years after Sousa’s 1854 birth and played for the Lincoln-Douglas Debates.

During its long history, the BCB has performed throughout the United States, including at Sousa’s gravesite in Washington and has professionally recorded music by Fred Jewell in the Scottish Rite.

A recipient of the Sudler Silver Scroll for Historic Bands, the BCB spearheaded the Fred Jewell Historic Marker project and performs each Sunday evening in June, July and August at its home, the Forest Park Band Shell.

This concert will feature euphonium soloist Norman Hanson in Buckley’s “American Portrait.”

Hanson, a music educator, is a graduate of Northwestern University and serves as a trombonist in many ensembles such as the Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra and Men of Note.

Highlights will reflect music from Veterans Day to Christmas with emphasis on patriotism.

Among the musical gems are “The Washington Post,” “Semper Fidelis” and “The Stars and Stripes Forever,” all by Sousa, “Armed Forces Salute,” “Shrine of Liberty” by Jewell, “America, the Beautiful,” several Christmas melodies arranged by Guy Holmes, “American Patrol,” “The Fourth of July” and Sousa’s own version of “The Star-Spangled Banner” sung by Indiana State University School of Music graduate Janelle R. Huber who will assist in the conducting duties.
