ISU School of Music to host Flute Fair next weekend

TERRE HAUTE — The Indiana State University School of Music will host a Flute Fair from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jan. 28 at the Landini Center for Performing and Fine Arts at Seventh and Chestnut streets.

The event, sponsored by the Yamaha Corporation of America, features flutist Mimi Stillman and psychologist Phillip Ewoldsen, who will present a workshop on performance anxiety.

Exhibits by Paige’s Music, seminars in selecting the right flute, private lessons, a recital and a master class featuring student competition winners are among the activities offered to students in grades 7-12.

Stillman is one of the most highly regarded flutists in the concert world and has performed recitals, chamber music, and with orchestras all over the United States and abroad. She involves all attendees in her presentations and encourages everyone to bring their flutes no matter what their playing level.

At 12, she was the youngest wind player ever admitted to the Curtis Institute of Music, where she received her bachelor’s degree studying with Julius Baker and Jeffrey Khaner. She was the youngest wind player ever to win the Young Concert Artists International Auditions.

In her role as artistic and executive director of the Dolce Suono Ensemble, which she founded in Philadelphia in 2005, she has established the ensemble as a highly regarded and pioneering force in the music world. Dolce Suono informs and enriches people’s lives through chamber music, with dynamic performances, innovative programming, the commissioning and performance of important contributions to the chamber music repertoire, and the engagement of diverse communities through educational and outreach events. The ensemble’s commissioning program has led to the creation of 21 new works in six years.

She has recorded for the EMI, Albany, and Dolce Suono labels. Stillman is regularly featured in the national press, as a guest on NPR’s “Performance Today,” WGBH Boston, WRTI Radio, and WHYY TV Philadelphia’s “On Canvas” show, and is host and performer on the Musical Encounters TV show and video “The Magic Flute.” She recorded the soundtrack for Kevin Bacon’s film “Loverboy.”

Students interested in participating in the student performers competition should submit a cassette or CD recording of their solo along with the registration form no later than Friday. Winners will be notified by Wednesday.

The recital, scheduled to begin at 1:15 p.m., features Stillman, accompanied by ISU faculty member Martha Krasnican. The recital is free and open to the public.

Students in grades 7 through 12 can attend the day-long fair for a $10 advance registration fee. Parents and teachers are invited to attend free of charge. Registration will also be available the day of the event for $15. For more information, contact Joyce Wilson at (812) 237-2758 or jwilson17@indstate.edu.
