Community Theatre opening season with ‘Hairspray’

TERRE HAUTE — Community Theatre of Terre Haute opens the 2012-13 season with the popular Broadway musical “Hairspray,” directed by Judith Higgins Price and Jeff Lorick.

Auditions for all roles will be staged at 2:30 p.m. Sunday and at 7 p.m. Monday and Tuesday. Auditions will be on the main stage at Community Theatre at 1431 S. 25th St. The musical will be performed seven times: Sept. 28-30 and Oct. 4-7.

Set in 1960s Baltimore, the musical comedy centers on the lovable heroine, Tracy Turnblad, who has a passion for dancing and wins a spot on the local TV dance program, “The Corny Collins Show.” Overnight she finds herself transformed from outsider to teen celebrity. Can a larger-than-life adolescent manage to vanquish the program’s reigning princess, integrate the television show, and find true love without mussing her hair? There are many roles to fill for both men and women ages 15 and up.

People interested in roles should bring music for a piece they have prepared. A dance routine will be taught at the audition, and script reading will also be evaluated.

There are also volunteer opportunities in lighting, costumes, sound, backstage work and more.

Volunteers are encouraged to come to the theater on audition nights to fill out volunteer information sheets and get involved.
