Dobbs Park Nature Center offers doorway to the outdoors

TERRE HAUTE — Dobbs Park Nature Center hosts Saturday educational programs once a month. Naturalist-led programs are offered for any organization during the week, on or off site, according to the center’s website.

Children must be accompanied by an adult for duration of any program, some of which involve outdoor activities. Participants are asked to dress for the weather. The center offers naturalist-led, themed hikes, according to the site. Cost is 50 cents, with an extra charge for some activities.

Inside the Nature Center is a variety of native wildlife on display, where visitors can get an up-close look at some of the animals of Indiana. View educational displays on topics such as plants, wildlife, tracking, the environment and the universe.

The Wildlife Viewing Area offers a peek at animal friends through one-way glass. Animals that stop by include feeder birds, squirrels, chipmunks and raccoons. Occasional visitors include deer, groundhogs, opossums, fox, owls and hawks.

Children ages 7 and up may participate in the Junior Naturalist Program, according to the site. Activities include volunteering for park service, completing a nature project, attending three naturlist-led activities, learning plant and animal identification and an observation project.
