Rosedale —
Big kids’ toys will be prominently featured at the 2012 Strawberry Festival in Rosedale.
Running June 1-3, the event will spotlight an expanded hobbyist exposition which will include not only the Civic Center’s annual model train and craft shows, but also a radio-controlled air show and remote-controlled auto racers.
Model railroad enthusiasts of all ages can see train layouts in operation all three days of the festival in the east half of the township Civic Center diagonal from the festival’s stage tent.
Provided by the Central Indiana Division of the national Model Railroaders’ Association, the displays are being presented free of charge. Rail vendors will also be on hand selling train modeling parts for various track scales and display interests.
Remote control airplanes will take flight June 2 immediately behind the elementary school on East Central Street. The air show, provided as a combined meet of the Terre Haute and Brazil Radio Control Flyers’ Club, will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The public is welcome to bring chairs and watch or ask questions.
Also on June 2 from noon to 5 p.m. the roar of auto racing will take over the parking lot of the Civic Center as Terre Haute’s remote- control auto racing association runs competition laps leading up to a final race for championship of the Strawberry Mini-500. A standard fixture at Joe’s Hobby Barn, the club regularly runs both indoor and outdoor tracks there year-round.
Local flavor will be added to these shows as the public competes for prizes in the first modelers’ contest. For an entry fee of $1 per model, festival-goers may compete in three classes (transportation, structures and landscapes, or critters and creatures) and in three age divisions (age 12 and under, age 13-18, and adult).
Registration at the Civic Center is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. with people’s choice voting until 3:30 and prizes awarded at 4 p.m.
Rounding out the weekend expo, the Classic Car, Truck, Cycle and Heap Show will take over north Main Street and adjacent space on June 3. Registration of $10 gets the vehicle owner a chance to win one of 13 awards ranging from Best of Show to “You Really Drove That Thing Here??” as well as a great number of lesser door prizes and freebies. Registration will begin at 11 a.m., judging is from 1-3:30 p.m., and trophies will be awarded at 4 p.m. Classic oldies music will be provided by J&J Music Express.

Queen and Junior Miss
Emceed by IGMA award-winner Dane Bailey, the June 1 Queen Scholarship Pageant final competition will lead off the opening night ceremonies, setting the tone for the weekend’s events by awarding a $500 prize to the 2012 Strawberry Queen. The companion Junior Miss competition for girls age 12-15 will share these two schedules. Entry fee for queen candidates is $20 and for Junior Miss $10. While Junior Miss is open to all, the queen entries must live in Parke County as they will advance to Parke County Fair competition. Little People’s Pageants
Beginning at 10 a.m. June 2, children will take the stage with the Little Strawberry Princess contest for girls ages 6-11. Both boys and girls of ages 2-5 will be competing for the titles of Mini Miss and Mister Berry, costuming being a major factor in their scoring. Strawberry Babes, ages 0-24 months, will be competing as male and female entries in this costume-focused contest.
Entry forms can be found at the Hair Hut in Rosedale, from the festival website or at the information table during the festival. Entry deadlines are one hour before each pageant, pre-judging is conducted at the fire house, and entry fee is $5 per contestant.
Strawberry’s Got Talent
Open to persons of all ages and talents, the June 2 contest will be divided into age categories to level the skill field. For a $10 entry fee, competitors may register either as individuals or as groups. no fixed types of talents are required to enter, so any kinds of talents from apple juggling to xylophone playing qualify. Prizes will be awarded in each category: child (grades K-6), youth (grades 7-12) and adult.

Pampered Pet Parade
Set for 2 p.m. June 2, this contest seems to take the term “pet” pretty loosely, as history has shown entries to range from frogs to pet rocks and even favorite people. Four categories will be awarded: cutest, best dressed, best trick or talent, and most original. Entry fee is $1. For information, call LouAnn Cook at (765) 548-0487.
Strawberry Eating
Are you faster than a 16-year-old? That is the requirement to challenge the champion, a slim teenage girl who for two years in a row has beaten grown men for the title. Contests are at 2 p.m. on June 2 and June 3.
Entry fee is $1 each day with entry forms will be available at the festival’s information table.
