Terre Haute Community Band marches out 2012 season in style

TERRE HAUTE — Marches are a staple of all community bands and audiences expect to hear some of their favorite marches at each concert. But a whole concert of marches? The Terre Haute Community Band is throwing out a challenge with their last concert “The Best Marches You Never Heard,” at 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, at Fairbanks Park. The concert is free and there will be some end of summer prizes for lucky winners.

A number of these selections are marches that are included in other longer compositions. One example is the “March,” which is the last movement from Symphonic Metamorphosis of Themes by Carl Maria von Weber by Paul Hindemith. “Moorside March” is from “A Moorside Suite” by Gustav Holst, which was composed specifically for brass bands and remains popular in the brass band repertoire today.

“Knightsbridge March” is from “London Suite” by Eric Coates, an English composer of light music and songs. Several of his compositions, including “Knightsbridge March,” were used as themes for British television programs. The “March of the Belgian Paratroopers” was written by Belgian composer Peirre Leemans as the result of a request from a World War II paratrooper unit.

It’s hard to believe that any march by John Philip Sousa would not be familiar but “The National Game is one of his lesser known works. It was written in 1925 for the 50th anniversary of the National League. “Repasz Band” is a march written for the Repasz band in Williamsport Penn., one of the oldest — it was organized in 1831— community bands in continuous existence in the United States.

To keep the audience on its toes there will be one deviation from the total march theme with “Candide Suite.” “Candide” is an operetta with music composed by Leonard Bernstein, based on the novella of the same name by Voltaire.
