River City features fused glass artist

River City Art Association member Edith Acton of Terre Haute is the featured artist this month in the Vigo County Public Library at Seventh and Poplar streets.

Acton’s work is on display through Monday to acquaint patrons with the use of fused glass to create art work.

Large and small pieces are her interpretation of how to shape the glass into something pleasing to the eye.

“I have always been a crafter, but after retiring I have found more time to develop more artistic work,” Acton said. “I find the closer I get to really using my abilities to create art works the more satisfied I am with the final product.”

Fused Glass is not a new art form. It has been around since the Roman and Egyptian empires. Archeological finds are revealing the elaborate stones that the kings and queens wore were pieces of colored glass that were cut and fused to create beautiful head-dresses and breast plates.

It has been here just within our grasp for centuries. During the last few years there has been a revival of the use of fused glass as an art medium.

Acton attended Otter Creek High School and Indiana State University and raised a family before retiring from the workforce to create art works for display at various River City Art Association events.
